I was told then that my insulin levels were more than twice the amount of someone with normal insulin levels, but my other tests came back normal. From that point I was referred to an endocrinologist to sort out the next step in diagnosis. My endocrinologist ordered even more tests, and nine vials of blood later, I got my diagnosis with a certainty. I had hyperinsulinemia.
Hearing some of the things coming out of my doctor’s mouth almost sent me into shock. I immediately realized I had to change my life around in order to control this disease or it would surely worsen. I was put on the only medication that actually helps control my insulin levels and pancreas functions, but because my father is allergic to this medication, I have to have frequent tests that show kidney function, so that I don’t end up in the hospital with organ failure like he did.
Apart from the new medication, I was told to see a dietician. My dietician set up a meal plan to help me reach a healthy weight which will also help control my insulin. With the help of my medication and my new meal plan, I have already lost fifteen pounds this month and continue to lose gradually. I do feel a difference in my health now, compared to just last October. I now see that I need to take care of my body in order to live life to the
