Personal Narrative: My First Stereotypes
My first stereotype is appearance. I have always struggled with the stereotype of if someone is not well dresses it means that they are not well behaved. I unconsciously think that if someone is not well dresses in public walking in streets he or she are in the lower class population.
Stereotype second stereotype is brown men with very long beard. Because of where I come from and the recent attacks that happened in my home country. Once I see a brown man or a middle Eastern man with long beard I automatically get scared and suspicious. When I was in Egypt over the weekend I noticed myself unconsciously getting suspicious of any man that has a long beard.

I have encountered these stereotypes several times in my life and most of them time the outcome is not good. Being an African American I experience this type of stereotype on a daily basis, when I go into clothing or a store I get followed around the store like I’m going to steal something. I look around at the store to see if any other customer is being followed around but they are not, I’m the only one who is being followed around the store.…

Stereotypes tend to make us forget to consider a person’s individuality and can cause us to judge a person prematurely. The things that we think based on stereotypes could very well be completely untrue. I also believe that because of the…

“A stereotype is an oversimplified or generalized idea about a certain group of people, often held by members of a different group.” A substantial proponent of stereotyping comes from those who are ignorant of topics such as gender, sexuality, race, religion, etcetera. The people imposing the cliche use stereotypes as a defense mechanism, to feel superior, safer, more comfortable.…

It was grand Final day at the Wimborne sports ground my stomach was churning inside of me. I Stumbled to my hands and began to throw up in one of the shrubs in the car park. I was interrupted by dads laughing “You sissy stop begin a girl and get with your team we’ve got a grand final to win!” I replied back “Well actually dad if you remember, the only reason our team made it to the grand final was because of me” my dad just laughed and said “Sure, sure whatever you believe Aden”. The only reason dad named me Aden was because my dad believed that one day I would hopefully grow up as some tough rugby league super star like Greg Inglis or Sam Thaiday. But no I am nothing more than a sticker figure, with shorter hair and gleaming blue eyes. Every…

I don’t know how to begin to define myself in order for you to understand who I truly am. I believe there is more to a person than stories that mould us into who we are today; like when one asks, “Tell me your story," I don’t think about that time when my family broke into two or that time I was diagnosed with my mental illnesses. I think of coffee, because coffee is bitter and bitter people drink coffee, sad people; people with heavy hearts and heavy footsteps, with tangled thoughts, people with anxiety and words left unspoken, people like me. Lonely people drink coffee. I think of the world map I have in my room with thumbtacks marking every country I want to visit. I think of foreign languages, and how beautiful it sounds when words form…

Gender was always a very tricky subject for me until I finally realized gender and sex are two different things. So, gender was never something I ever really thought about. I was a girl and that was that. It was definitely assumed for me based on my biological “label” of female at birth. I grew up with two sisters so there were lots of baby dolls and Barbies. But as I got older, aspects of other gender(s) became aware to me that I decided I wanted to incorporate into my own gender. I did not like wearing dresses so that “norm” was thrown out of my wardrobe options. I was much more comfortable in pants and a t-shirt playing outside. I became very interested in sports and always wanted to be outside shooting baskets or throwing around…

One time I took a leadership role that was the most relevant to me was when I was the leader in my robotics team in high school. I needed to take the role because everyone else seemed lost and I was the only one with previous robotics experience so I told everyone if they mid if I become the group leader and no one minded. One thing I learned about myself by being the leader is I am very good at giving people specific jobs and keeping everyone on task without them getting distracted. Another thing I learned about myself is i am a strict yet fun leader because I know when its time to stop playing around and get to…

Stereotypes are generalizations of individuals or groups of people that may or may not be true. There are stereotypes for all different kinds of people. Most stereotypes can be offensive to the ones they are directed towards because of their lack of validity. However, we live in a world of judgment, so stereotypes will always surround us. I have fallen under the category of quite a few stereotypes. I am an easy target since I have blonde hair, I wear eyeglasses and I am Irish. Since I have blonde hair, I must be dumb. Since I have glasses, I must be a nerd. Since I am Irish, I must be an alcoholic. Of all the stereotypes that I could so easily fall into, the one that most commonly comes to my attention and annoys me the most is the dumb blonde stereotype.…

Intentions do not matter, impacts do. Firstly, it is not appropriate to call racial minorities, even in a teasing tone, “whitewashed.” I am East Asian, but to my Asian peers I am “not Asian enough.” For example, my Asian friends - in their mind – playfully tell me I am “not being Asian enough” if I do not travel in packs with other Asian people or if I befriend Caucasians. It is counterintuitive for my Asian peers, who live in a city as racially diverse as Toronto is, to erase my heritage and patronize me for not fitting in the ethnic stereotypes that was assigned to me at birth. In the racial mosaic that Toronto is we should be celebrating fact that in the 21st century all these cultures have integrated so much that people apart of different…
