Personal Narrative: My Interview With A Home
The person I interviewed for my Home Fit Assignment was Ms. Lizzie Fikes. She is a 64 year old women who lives with her cousin. She is still in good health and works a full time and part time job. They live in a newly built Single Family in Capitol Heights, Maryland. The home was modelled to fit an aging senior citizen with raised toilet seats, both carpet and hardwood floors, etc. This home is located walking distance from the nearest metro station and a two minute walk from the closet bus stop. Retail shopping centers are a five to ten minute drive from the home.

From the Home Livability checklist, I choose the following two questions out those that were asked to discussion in this assignment, because I found them to be very important. Are the doorways and hallways wide enough to let a wheelchair pass through? Are there grab bars in the bathroom or has the wall been reinforced so that you can add them? For the first question Ms. Fikes answered “Yes, the hallways and doors are wide enough for someone with a wheelchair to pass through.” She knew this because one of her friends came to visit who was in a wheelchair and she was able to travel throughout the home without having to make any

The first one was about general safety, having a telephone in every room of the house. There was only one telephone that was found in the kitchen. Ms. Fikes said that everyone within the household uses their cell phones. Another issue that I found was in the outdoor area section, there was no railing that leads from the outside of the house inside. Although, there’s one from the inside of the garage to the house, the main entrance of the house is an extremely important. The cost to add a landline telephone to every room in the house would cost about $50 for 4 wireless home phones. On the other hand, adding a railing to the front of the house would cost around

All residents at St. Peter’s require long-term service as a result of either a physical or a mental disability which compromises the residents’ independence. St. Peter’s main goal is to enhance the residents’ life quality, which can be improved by reducing the residents’ dependence on the highly trained staff of St. Peter’s residence home [1]. Examples of residents that would benefit from becoming more independent are Bill and Betty who the client believes would benefit from being able to independently use the washing machine facilities at St. Peter’s [2].…

Having the luxury of great health and family, it can be difficult for me to see outside the realm of comfortability and see the daily hardships people experience. There are so many people without housing, stability, and monetary resources, and these people often find themselves wondering where they can find help and figure out what to do next during trying times. One place people can reach out for assistance is Ronald McDonald House Charities. The nonprofit provides housing and food for families with a critically ill child in the hospital. The forty-two room house aims to provide comfort and support for families living through their worst nightmare. The charity provides this support by its network of staff and volunteers who prepare food for…

As a Chinese-American, my family expected me to help out at the restaurant while maintaining straight A's in school. But, it wasn't easy; every day, I would report to the restaurant after school and immediately start working. Inside the kitchen, I would pack all the orders into aluminum containers, place them into a brown bag, and insert packets of sauces and utensils. Burns and cuts were common due to the terrible and tearable aluminum containers. Outside at the front desk, I would answer the seemingly endless ringing phones. In many instances, customers had to wait either on the phone or at the front desk for me to find their orders on the computer, even after they showed me where it was on the menu. During lunch hours, the pressure was even…

I spoke with Scotty regarding the home. He pleasantly introduced himself and provided his assistance. Scotty listened attentively and patiently to my questions. He paused to reference the property file and then informed me that the home was still available with no present offers. Scotty was friendly, but did not make an effort to build rapport. He asked questions to help understand my buyer's needs. Although Scotty provided information about the home he did not speak in an encouraging tone of voice. In general, I found him to be a polite and professional…

When older adults move to retirement communities there are major life transitions that occur. While these communities vary considerably in their focus, the types of housing available, and the services offered, they are primarily designed in the United States for well elderly who are able to provide for their own basic needs. In Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), there is the option of moving from independent living to assisted living and then to skilled care. Residents move their personal belongings, including furniture to their new home. Services include housekeeping, meals, and care of the apartment and grounds. This transition involves numerous changes and can result in adjustment needs that may or may not be met sufficiently.…

The four important steps provided in the toolkit are Assessments, Identifying Resources About the Community, Designing Services, and Program Evaluation. While designing my assisted living community, I used the four steps process to create a plan that will focus on the housing needs of aging adults related to location, affordability and independence, because the number of baby boomers is expected to increase in few years and if nothing is done now, many seniors will have to move and separate from their families to find affordable housing. In addition, It will provide social and communal benefits that are more ethnically and racially diverse for our seniors and generations to come, because needs among seniors depends on many factors such as health and care needed, culture, financial means, lifestyle…etc. Finally, there will be routine evaluations within the community that will help identify issues and allow for…

Even though my father’s communication isn’t the best I feel my self-esteem is solid. Instead of focusing on the negative parts of my home communication i pay the most attention to the positive to build myself up. Using what O’Hair et al. spoke about in Chapter 2. Basically my interpretation of what was stated is that we can for cognition by using our knowledge about ourselves, how we feel about ourselves, and how we think we will fair in the future. (45) So by this logic I feel that making sure what I think about myself is positive and reigns supreme over anything else I might here that could be discouraging.…
