Personal Narrative: My Journey To East Carolina University
As I embarked on my college journey I was very eager to get away from the familiarity of New Jersey. I decided to head south and attend East Carolina University. To me this was a huge culture shock; the people, the fashion, the accents, the food, and the pace of life were all extremely different. I went through a long period of homesickness and just missing the little things of the northern lifestyle. Despite my everlasting discontent, I decided to stick it out and hope for the best. I joined a sorority and got involved around campus through intermural sports and other activities. This still, however, has failed to help me feel a sense of comfortableness. I came to this university as an intended nursing major and as I took multiple science related classes and struggled through Chemistry, I came to …show more content…
I would spend hours on hours just looking at the latest trends on different clothing sites as well as watching what the top designers were creating each season for their next fashion show. Just like any other girl, I do absolutely love to shop, but other than just picking up a dress and paying for it I am truly intrigued by the way merchandise affects me. Most times I am in awe at how such a simple dress can look so elegant or be designed to look couture. Even more so how one simple piece can change an entire look and be worn a million ways. Everything about merchandise and the way we can use our creativity and sense of style to express ourselves is truly fascinating. It is simply an art that your everyday person almost always takes for granted.
For myself, this is why I wish to study the world of fashion. I plan to study Fashion Business Management but would also like to explore the merchandising aspects of the industry as well. I believe that I am a perfect candidate for the Fashion Institute of Technology, I believe that my creativity and positive attitude will further enhance my passion for this

I came to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in the fall. I suffered from depression my junior and senior year of high school. I was never officially diagnosed, because I lied to every therapist my mother sent me to. I could not be honest with anyone but myself at the time. However, I thought things would be different when I came to college. I thought I would be able to open up to people again, but I never anticipated that I would get worse. I thought college would cure me, for some reason. Ironically, I got even worse my first semester in college. My previous burdens added on to the pressure of getting good grades, being involved on campus, and trying to make friends. It was all too much for me. It also didn't help…

But neglecting school work has finally come to a toll as I took the ACT and the SAT with terrible scores due to my testing anxiety. I entered school in August of 2009 and did not focus on my studies. After just one year my GPA was a 1.376, because I did not have the drive that I had in high school to succeed. After a couple of years away from Texas Christian University, while attending a 2-year college, I realized what I wanted to do with my life, sparking the motivation I had been searching for. I then decided to return to TCU and fix my awful GPA, which I managed to do with hard work, determination, and appropriate priorities. After one year of nonstop studying and focus, I have managed to raise my GPA to a 2.777, removing myself from academic probation and qualifying for opportunities I was not eligible before. This was difficult for me because I also work part-time…

Throughout high school I was able to develop many skills pertaining to the social aspects of college, which have really helped me. Growing up, I’ve been fortunate enough to live in a two parent, middle class home. I have never experienced death of a family member or someone close to me. I have been so lucky to have such a wonderful life. Once I started going to leadership camps, meeting kids who have had such difficulties in their lives I realized not everyone’s lives are as happy-go-lucky as mine. This has taught me to treat every individual I meet in college with compassion and kindness, as you never know what kind of life they’ve had. No one should be judged by his or her social class, friend group, how they dress, or come off in public settings. Each person has experienced some hardship in their life and thus everyone deserves their chance to show a person who they truly are. Using this mindset I have been able to make many friends in organizations such as the President’s Leadership Class in which I wouldn’t have typically met them. This predetermined view of the world has helped me graciously in college.…

My time at the community college was used to focus on building a strong academic foundation, specifically tutoring international students English every week as they tried to maneuver through their lives in the United States. I remember during one particular session, a Chinese exchange student told me that when she first arrived in Seattle, she was in a state of euphoria. However, her inability to communicate fluently with her peers hindered her from adapting to the customs in America. Consequently, it impeded her from making her own place in society. Another individual, who emigrated from Eritrea, confessed she was still unfamiliar with having additional resources at her fingertips. She grew up in an area where advanced technological tools,…
