most extraordinary rewards.” I didn’t know exactly what she meant, but I didn’t look back.
The journey across the field was not easy. The crows frightened me the most because I have heard many tales at potlucks about crows eating little leprechauns like me. I finally made it, and standing in front of me was a rather large contraption. I always assumed it was a hill, but now I knew it wasn’t. It was square, made of wood, and had steps leading to a red door. I realized without a doubt that it was a human house. I found a crevice that I could squeeze into. Us leprechauns are good at that sort of thing. The crevice led into a slightly larger opening perfect for a leprechaun. I slept for a long time, tired from my long journey across the field. When I finally woke up I was hungry and decided to explore. At the end of the passageway was a huge room. There was rows of shelves filled with shoes. I realized I hit the gold pot, this was a shoemaker’s house. I loved making shoes! I forgot my hunger and set to work finishing a pair of shoes on the floor. During the days I watched the family and customers in the
house and ate mushrooms around the house. At night I come out of my crevice I called home and finished shoes. Many days went by and I grew even more curious by the people living in the house. They made me miss my large, loud family a bit. They showed unconditional love towards each other and always tried to make others happy. The shoemaker also started to leave me food at night along with plenty of materials to make new shoes, instead of just finishing them. I came out of my crevice one night and found the shoemaker waiting for the phantom (me) to come out. I could have disappeared, but I wanted to meet this human. When I appeared he started to smile. He thanked me for making beautiful shoes. I liked this humble man and offered him three wishes. He was silent for a long moment. Finally he spoke,” My family and they are alive and well, and that is the only thing I need.” I finally knew what my mother was trying to tell me. Her job as a mom was ordinary, but she loved us extraordinary measures.
I always thought the only greatness for me was outside of the field. I now have a wonderful family and realize I couldn’t have been more wrong. From time to time I take a journey across the field and visit my greatest friend the shoemaker. We talk about our families and make beautiful shoes. I only ever stay a day, however, because I don’t want to be parted from my family.
