Personal Narrative: My Life As A Mexican/American College Student
I take pride in being a Mexican/American college student at Santa Ana College. I have been through my own struggles in life just as everyone else has in this city. My motivation has and shall always be my family. I push myself forward in life to be able to give back to my parents and my community. The only other person in my family that has completed college is my mother. While still raising me and working as a teacher, she received her Master’s Degree in Child and Adolescent Studies and has been a great inspiration for me to keep studying. Now she is working as a director at the SAC Child Development Center. While I volunteered at SAC East Child Development Center, I fell in love with working with preschoolers. I loved their energy and while I was there I gained their love. Whenever they would see me they would hug me and ask me to play with them. My major is Child and Adolescent Studies and I hope one …show more content…
I, on the other hand, like investing my money in my education. During the semesters ii have been attending, my father has been paying for my studies and at times he has thrown it in my face how much he has invested in me. My brothers invested his money on their education, but after a couple of months decided to stop going and all his money went to waste. My father is afraid I will do the same and constantly reminds me that I need to focus on school or his money will be going to waste. I constantly get reminders of how much money school has cost him and how I need to be considerate of that. I know what he says is true, but after hearing it so many times it can bring stress. With the privilege of getting this scholarship money, I would have my dad off my back for a while and I also wouldn’t have to worry if he is in debt. All I want to do in life is study and gain more knowledge. In ten years I hope to be a teacher and change children’s lives by helping them learn and gain the knowledge I

I enjoyed being with children so much that my first “real-world” paying job was at a summer camp. Between volunteering at the church Vacation Bible School and working at the summer camp I realized I have a great connection with children and can help make a difference in their lives and that is what I seek to do. I have since been employed at a few different childcare facilities along with a music store and book store but no matter what I always found myself returning to working in either a childcare or school…

I talked to my great grandmother, on my moms side, and asked her many questions about our ancestors. "Most of the generations I know about have lived in New Mexico. Usually when people ask us we say Spain because we know our ancestors didn't come from Mexico. I'd say Spain" she said word for word. I also asked her how long ago they came and she didn't know so I assume they came a long time ago.…

As a minority, immigrating from Korea to a wildly different country like the United States has been the most influential decision that my family made to live the possibility of the "American Dream". Moreover, growing up as an Asian-American wasn’t simple; I was faced with the challenge of malicious racial slurs, spiteful judgment, and condemnation. However, through these criticism, I’ve grown to understand that our response to those judgements is what builds character in which has made me more transparent, vulnerable, and empathetic.…

I come from a very traditional nuclear Mexican family. The oldest of 5 siblings and the first in my family to come to college. From the Southside of Chicago where you constantly hear airplanes pass your home. Growing up as a second generation Asian American, courage was a word that I was well versed with. My parents fled Cambodia after spending years in rice fields, fearfully working for the communist party that tore their lives away from them. When the moon rose each night the blood and tears of the broken country were shadowed by the somber preparations for the next day. For my father, the day just begun; no one ever dared to escape before dark. His arrival in a Thailand refugee camp was crucial. As a teacher, he was targeted. The goal was to demolish all evidence of the “old society.” But he was caught. The soldiers tied him to a tree and beat him. Although no matter how many times he was hit, he continued to say his prayers. His continuous…

I enrolled in classes such as financial literacy, business and accounting, and have even joined business groups such as Business Professionals of America. I dedicated my life towards achieving a better education not because of my mom whom I love wants me to succeed or because I would be the first in my family to complete an advanced education; but for myself. I tread through life only for my success for I am the only one who can be responsible for how my life turns out. I have known since I was a child that education is important and divine for education can be the gateway towards my ascension for greatness; as a result I have taken honors and AP classes whenever they become available. I am proud of the hard work I have put in my education because through my sheer determination I demonstrate to all who can see that Hispanics are not all lazy and undetermined people whom just want to live off the governments programs for immigrants.…

Growing up in an immigrant household came with many difficulties. Learning English was very easy for me because I was always in daycare but coming home was hard because I could not communicate with my parents. Many immigrants came to the United States for different reason and for a new opportunity. They came to America for a hope of starting a new, better life since they probably had a rough life back home, or to get away from previous problems back home. Once the immigrants arrived they were first medically examined by the medical examiner, me.…

I don’t believe that I would be efficiently learning in school, doing research, or even be applying for this scholarship if it weren’t for my parents. They are the ones who push me to live a better life than them, to be the best at what I want to do, and to work hard. One of the best things they do is give me advice on how to get to where I want to be. “We know that it's hard, but you can do it,” they encourage. It truly is encouraging to have parents who believe in me. They make me to trust that I can be successful in the future. My parents truly are one of the best resources that I…

Growing up, I lived in a predominantly Latino community. I was always around people who shared my same culture, beliefs, and background. Rarely did I ever experience challenges against my culture and beliefs. As I grew older, and attained more experiences, I became aware of the problems in my community, and in the world. Just recently, I learned how imperative it is for me to embrace my culture and to help my community. For this reason, I was inspired to help make a difference. Over the past few years, I have committed myself to various community service organizations; and have become more active within my Latino community. My biggest community service commitments so far have been with the Toby Keith Foundation Teen Board and the Junior Rotarian…

Growing up in a community that is mostly Hispanic creates a type of shield, not allowing for different cultures or ethnicity to diversify the community. A Hispanic family living in such an isolated community takes a toll on the way we view the world. This environment has indulged my curiosity. Being the second youngest sibling of my family of seven has allowed me to learn from my older brothers, and have the privilege to be a leader to my little brother and serve as a role model to him. Though none of my family members went to college, and my parent’s highest education being a high school diploma, it hasn’t discouraged me to follow their footsteps, but rather give the encouragement to dedicate myself to be the first generation and in my whole…

Growing up I excelled in every educational aspect of school. However the stereotype for someone of my skin color did not allow for me to be both Mexican and smart. My Hispanic peers began to exclude me; the most common way they did that was by taking away my identity as a Mexican. I heard “Diego you white” an uncountable number of times throughout my schooling. I noticed that my grades and vocabulary would trigger that comment so I began to change the way I acted in order to fit in. It was not until recently that I realized the fault in changing and found a peaceful merge between the two speech communities.…

Growing up as the daughter of 2 immigrants isn't easy. There are a lot of people that discriminate them for "coming and having children just to get the benefits that our government gives". I know my parents didn't come for that. My mom came here because my grandma was really sick and she needed money so she could buy the medicine for her. My father came because he had just lost his brother and his family counted on him to bring food to the table and to keep a roof above his families head. People with power such as politicians describe Latinos as rapist , drug dealers, and thieves which not all of us are. There are always good and bad people where ever you go. They are describing them as if we are doing something wrong for trying to keep…
