I am an eighteen year old living in Atwater, California. Atwater is in the central valley, about two hours away from San Francisco and about four hours away from Los Angeles. Prior to living in California my family and I used to live in Bloomfield, New Jersey. I was also born in Newark, New Jersey. The world that I lived in and family background has has a lot to do with my dreams and aspirations. My family's background has influenced my dreams and aspirations in multiple ways.

In the Central Valley, most of the people that I have been going to school with will not do much when they are done with their schooling after high school, which is not the proper way to succeed. I want to move on with my education and learn things that I once did not even know about because like many say knowledge is power. With knowledge, one is able to do more than what was possible before. The people in this area have also taught me that in order to accomplish what you desire one must work a lot. The people in Atwater, California have a lot of nice things, and the reason being is because they are hard working. I want to be able to accomplish my dream of becoming a well known Plastic Surgeon and work very hard to be able to support my own family.
The world that I came from has helped shaped my dreams and aspirations in several different ways that have affected me positively. My family's background gave me the desire to learn, which is what many people in my generation lack. The area that I live in has made me want to work harder in order to get the things in life that I desire. I would never want to change the world that I came from because without it I would not be the individual that I am

When I first heard of this opportunity, I became very ecstatic. As an avid New York Times reader, the opportunity to work with the paper itself was exciting. I love to write and find myself always writing on my blog or my journal, expressing my story and my voice. I want to express my unique voice as Laissa Alexis, the uniqueness of the experiences I have been through. My life as a Haitian immigrant, living in New Jersey and going to an all-girls Catholic school in an urban area. I would be able to express a narrative that is not often heard. I view the world in different lenses and I would love to share with the…

It was Monday, May 30th, 2011. My family was driving home from a hotel we were staying at in Virginia, after going to Kings Dominion for my birthday day the day before. On the way home, we stopped at a Cracker Barrel for breakfast. During our meal, we got a call from my aunt telling us that my uncle, my mother’s brother, was in the hospital. Only a few days before he had moved back to Guatemala without saying goodbye to me. Once we were back on the road, my mother continued to get phone calls updating us about what was happening down there, as each call came through we all became more and more anxious wait for the answer. Then it came it just wasn't the answer we were hoping for, my mother began pushing on the walls of the car as if they were…

I was raised in the small town of Hidalgo, Texas, just on the side of the Mexican Border. Living there made me grow up thinking that possibilities were limited and there was not much offered to us. Although, along the years, I realized that this town did not define me , and it actually made me strong enough to take on life elsewhere in the future . I remember being in this town ten years ago, and there was only local businesses . The town has grown along with me, and it has opened up opportunities to its community and myself.…

The year I turned six, my mom decided to migrate to Mexico. However, she was not able bring my one year old sister along. While my little sister stayed with my grandparents, my mom and I flied out to Mexico. I still remember the feeling in my stomach the moment I stepped out of that airport. I was an ocean away from my hometown. My first day of school was chaos. Everyone in the school was speaking in Spanish. I did not understand the customs and mannerisms. It was difficult to not feel as an outcast. The most complicated part was expressing my feelings, and my needs to the teachers. I lived in Mexico, Tijuana for six years, after becoming adapted to the environment, my mom came home one day and told me that we are moving to the United States.…

My father is a Sicilian combat veteran from Brooklyn and my mother is an immigrant from El Salvador. The disparity of their backgrounds is immeasurable, but their lives have impacted me greatly. They divorced when I was 3, but their relationship is unbelievably strong. I lived in a diverse environment, speaking different languages and existing in polar opposite lifestyles. The dichotomy molded me and influenced my character, perspective and state of being. Under my father’s roof, I endured a military-style upbringing-but the love was apparent. I was encouraged to play sports and excel in my academics. I am competitive in nature, and exceeding was always my aspiration. However certain events have caused me to falter, but I now understand that the duty of each human is to delegate their time for the advancement of the species and if no one holds you responsible, it is imperative that you do so.…

My childhood consisted of seeing people who look like me and who identified with the same cultural ideas; however, after moving to southern California, I witnessed a diverse population with different cultures. I was four years old when my family immigrated to the United States from Ukraine. It was a crazy experience and a big life change for all of us. There were many obstacles to be faced living a life completely far away from what we used to call home. It was very difficult to leave my grandparents back in Ukraine. They were a significant source of encouragement for me especially my grandfather. He was my hero. He was the main nurturer who provided a lot of encouragement and support for me in the very hard times of my life. In times of crisis when life felt like a crashing wave, he was the one I always ran to for guidance. Like most immigrants, we didn’t know any English, therefore it was extremely hard to communicate with anyone.…
