Personal Narrative: My Third Discourse Class

Writing has always been something that hasn’t came easy to me. I seem to struggle to get my ideas put onto paper. This semester this will be my third discourse class I have taken at UMKC and I can honestly say the past two classes have helped me with my literature and written skills greatly. Since my freshman year at UMKC I’ve learned new tools when doing anything involved in discourse. I use the tools that I learned in my pervious discourse classes to help construct my notes or thoughts and put them on paper. The writing lab at the university has been a great on campus tool that has helped me advance my skills in discourse or simply help me on a paper when I’m stuck. When I’m constructing an academic paper I typically starting with a outline and use that to constructed my rough draft.
When I’m constructing the outline I’ll use my thesis or main topic as the main focus and branch off with sub topics. I’ve learned from previous classes that by constructing multiple drafts, the end result will be more organized and more thought out, also by constructing multiple drafts it allows for peer review and revision. Peer review has been a tool that I enjoy doing because it has benefited my writing greatly. It gives the writer a chance to discuss with another student what they thought needs to be improved on as well as what they thought was good in the writing. I believe this is an important step when creating an academic paper because second opinions and revision from someone else can prepare the writer for the final draft. Another step I’ve taken while writing papers for classes is having a family member also do a peer review and suggest what needs to be changed or revised.
