The day of our first game was two days into our trip. I clutched my blue and yellow ticket tightly in my hand as we boarded the train to go to the stadium. “So many people,” I said to my dad. It was then that I started to feel accepted into that large community of people. In our seats, I cheered with others around us, trying to take pictures with everyone so I could later relive that amazing feeling. We tried to embrace as much of this beautiful community of people as we could. In lots of ways, this process of finding and joining this Brazilian community was familiar and comforting. Back at home, I pursue this sense of belonging every day. In my school there are dozens of tiny cliques throughout the student body, just as there are in almost all high schools. I try and be involved in as many extra-curricular activities as I can so I can stay involved and experience this sense of community just as I did in Brazil.
In Brazil I saw thousands of people invested in a sport they all love. And although there were fans from every corner of the world, they all came together and united to enjoy this historic World Cup event. If given the opportunity to attend your college, Michigan State University, I too will strive to reach this sense of belonging by staying involved in clubs and other extra-curricular activities, all the while bettering the students around
