Personal Narrative: My Trip To Soccer
There I was, crammed up on a flight headed for Sao Paulo, Brazil to watch my favorite sport: soccer. For months before the trip started, I dreamed about the skyscrapers and the stadiums and the passionate fans I expected from all over the world. Little did I know that what I was about to experience in those 10 days was nothing like I anticipated.

The day of our first game was two days into our trip. I clutched my blue and yellow ticket tightly in my hand as we boarded the train to go to the stadium. “So many people,” I said to my dad. After a short but raucous ride we exited the train and a sea of people emerged in front of our eyes, and it was then that I truly realized that there were hundreds of thousands of other loyal fans that came from

It was then that I started to feel accepted into that large community of people. In our seats, I cheered with others around us, trying to take pictures with everyone so I could later relive that amazing feeling. We tried to embrace as much of this beautiful community of people as we could. In lots of ways, this process of finding and joining this Brazilian community was familiar and comforting. Back at home, I pursue this sense of belonging every day. In my school there are dozens of tiny cliques throughout the student body, just as there are in almost all high schools. I try and be involved in as many extra-curricular activities as I can so I can stay involved and experience this sense of community just as I did in Brazil.

In Brazil I saw thousands of people invested in a sport they all love. And although there were fans from every corner of the world, they all came together and united to enjoy this historic World Cup event. If given the opportunity to attend your college, Michigan State University, I too will strive to reach this sense of belonging by staying involved in clubs and other extra-curricular activities, all the while bettering the students around

Over the weekend I had a huge Soccer Tournament in Grey. We had two games on Saturday and one game Sunday. In the first game we played a Cumberland club team and beat them 2-0. In our second game we played Westbrook and won 5-0. So at the end of the day we were 2-0 and in first for our bracket, but winslow was also 2-0. Going into Sunday we had to beat South Portland by two goals and not let them score. We ended up tying them 3-3 and we got eliminated because Winslow beat Westbrook 4-0.…

It had been a long and tough game. The sun was beating down on us and we were all tired when all of a sudden the game’s time limit ran out. We were all tense because no one knew the score. The ref said that the game was tied. We all exhaled. We hadn't even realized we were holding our breaths. That meant we all had to do PKs (Penalty kicks) until one team won.…

It was a frigid, windy, Friday night in October. The only light was the bright and beaming illumination of the stadium lights projecting over the soccer field. The bleachers were full, it seemed as if the whole school was there, and as a freshman with anxiety, it made it hard to cope with the fact, that I was going to be a starter for the varsity soccer team.…

People ask me why I care so much. They tell me it’s just a game, get over it. But soccer has never been just a game to me. Soccer has been consuming my time, thoughts, and body since my parents signed me up for small-time recreational soccer twelve years ago that developed into extremely competitive travel soccer. They, perhaps unknowingly, threw me headlong into a life of traveling countless miles, long nights of practice, and an unforgettable amount of tears, sweat, and bloodshed. All which persisted over the course of my extensive soccer career.…

From the time I was a young child, I was taught the importance of hard work and dedication. Up to this point, I have lived by these principles, incorporating them into every aspect of my life. Although this determination has proved useful in many circumstances, it has been most apparent in my one true passion: soccer. I have put my heart and soul into the sport since the moment my five-year-old feet first touched a ball. Now I believe that growing up is about making decisions that one’s former self would have been much too frightened or intimidated by to follow through with. In some cases, it is having enough of a backbone to avoid being walked upon by those who think that they have a right to do so, no matter the repercussions. That is why that, in my opinion, the moment that I quit the Seneca Valley Varsity Soccer team was the moment that I finalized my transition from childhood to adulthood.…

I started playing club soccer when I was 7 years old, playing for under the wing of Charley Amblo. This was a training team only, it was not till I was nine that I was started playing for a travel team. Sweat pours down your back. Your neck aches from craning to see the stage better. The seven- hour wait for tickets was grueling, but here you are; watching. Waiting. As you hold up your light stick, you wait with the rest of the stadium in tense anticipation. You have screencaps of their faces from your favorite MVs. Photo cards of their best selcas in your wallet. And their newest album in your bag, ready for signing during the fan meet. Every peso is worth it, just to breathe the same air they do. The air shifts--- suddenly it’s all screams. Voices; high, low, shrill, throaty, scream from all around the stadium as the lights come on and the first beats of electronic music ring out from the speakers. Your own throat aches with its first scream…
