Personal Narrative: My Experience In Football
think of a time when you worked extra hard for something and you accomplished it. What did you feel? a sense of joy and accomplishment? well that’s what I felt in these next few stories Imma gonna tell ya.
It was 2012, football had just ended and I’d never been so excited for wrestling season. I was coming off a season where I went 34-8 and was a state qualifier, getting second at both regional and sectionals. I had wrestled 75 pounds last year, but this year I was weighing 90 pounds and was gonna have to lose some weight to make 80. I had been elected captain at the end of the 2011-2012 season. I won the first couple matches of the season and going into the Olympia tournament I was 3-0 I beat a returning state qualifier in the quarter finals. In the semifinals I came out scared and got beat 12-8 I was devastated I had pinned that kid twice the year before. But I wrestled back and

I got down early and he kept pushing the pace going into the third period I was down 6-1. I chose top, I quickly turned him to his back for a five count and got three points. We kept wrestling and i turned him again, but the ref messed up and only gave me two points so we were going into overtime. He shot in on my leg, but I slammed his head to the mat as hard as I could. It came down to this if I could just spin around and get the takedown I would go to state. I rammed my fist across his face trying to get him to break his grip he didn't let up. I did it again, this time harder I could hear the bone on bone grinding together and he gave up. I spun around and won. I lost 4-2 in the finals to the number one kid in the state, but I was okay with that. At state i was ranked 4th but wrestled bad and got 6th. But I felt like I was a state champ I had accomplished something that I had worked very hard for and no one could take that away from

Wrestling is tough, it is a sport much from its participants, but if one has the courage to step out on the mat dressed in a uniform that leaves a little imagination and challenge another human to a match to see who the better man is. Danger can be found in every sport, and wrestling are no more prone to injury’s to soccer, football, track stars, lacrosse. Wrestling creates a sense of accountable for one’s actions. Those that work hard, succeed. There is no one to hide behind; every flaw and mistake is brought forth in a match. It takes a great deal of mental toughness and sacrifice nights with friends for extra practice and consideration, favorite food to lose the extra pound, and sleep when one needs to wake up at 4am to go for a run before school begins. That competitive nature of clashing with another human being creates a sense of community within the wrestling world. Those that have never participated in the sport have a tough time understanding this. Opponents’ must shake hands before and after, showing respect for the other fighter, win or lose. It is uncommon to see administration in the form of an embrace even after one has lost a tough battle. These values are created through combative sports, and stay with a wrestle for the remainder of their…

When I was in 7th grade I wrestled this guy named Bo Meikamp from Edwardsville. In 8th grade I wrestled him again and he beat me in the second period, and then he ended up placing 3rd at state our 8th grade year. Our next match was at the Edwardsville Freshman Duels and he beat me by points in the third period. Later my freshman year I wrestled Bo at the Conference Championships, and I put everything into that match, but I lost in overtime. I knew that I probably will wrestle him again during Regionals at the Jackie Joyner Kersee Center in East Saint Louis.…

I have experienced many failures in my life but one stuck out to me more than others. I have wrestled since I was 8 years old. Through all my matches I have wrestled in my life, something hit me. My sophomore year I worked really hard to make it to the state tournament. Going into the sectional tournament, my record was 19-3. I had a by the first round which put me in the semi-finals. After winning my semi-finals match 12-4, that put me in the finals against a kid I wrestled 3 times before this. He pinned me the first time we wrestled and the next 2 times we wrestled I pinned him. Going into this match I had a lot of confidence because I knew I could win. I underestimated the want he had to win. He surprised me and came out strong. My sectional…

It all started at ninth street with some friends of mine John and I started recruiting some people to come play football with us. I honestly didn’t know I had a pretty decent arm. I originally was going to start practicing to play wide receiver instead of quarterback. At the time Odell Beckham Jr. ( wide receiver for the New York Giants ) was extremely explosive and dynamic on offense. Seeing him blow up on offense made me want to try out for wide receiver. But somehow John convinced me to play quarterback.…

I can beat anyone, through wrestling I can be a winner. Never had I wrestled though after that encounter in the gym, my first glimpse of wrestling, I knew that whenever I found myself on that mat that I had the power and strength and the will to succeed. My mind was set; wrestling is where I wanted to be, it was where I had to be. Huron is where I began my career in wrestling though it is a small community, it offers many community activities. I joined the wrestling team through rec league and this is where my love for wrestling began so I will never forget where I came from.…

My first goal was to complete a 200 pound bench press. I selected this goal because I wanted more power in football. My second goal was to do 75 consecutive push ups. I chose this goal because push ups are a great exercise to increase your bench press. My third goal was to get really cut and lower my body fat percentage. I increase cardio and changed to a healthier diet to achieve this goal. My fourth goal was to weight 150lbs. I chose this goal because having some extra weight will help me on the football field. I tried to make these goals reasonable and with a lot of hard work I was able to achieve 2 of them.…

On Saturday, December 12th, 2015, when arriving home around ten o'clock from a long wrestling meet that lasted till around nine o'clock, I got home, then ate dinner, and then went on the couch to relax. My mom complained "You're always so tired after wrestling and you come home so late." After a little conversation, my mom got to the point where she admitted "I don't want you to do wrestling." Prior to when she said that, on the way home, my stepfather also admitted "Your mom and I have been talking about how you should quit wrestling." Eventually during the conversation my mom and I shared, it all made sense. I knew I wasn't ready to give up wrestling because of what i think it means to me, but of course I started crying. This is that moment…

As the wrestling season approached one of the wrestlers kept asking me if I was going to wrestle and he was always disappointed when I would say no, but he would continue to ask me until I agreed to at least come to a few open mats, before the actual season starts. At the open mats I realized how little I actually knew about wrestling, but that fact aside it was fun. We would play dodgeball as part of our warm-up and as our cool down at the end, I foolishly thought that was going to be an everyday occurrence during the regular season, so I went out for the regular season, and received quite the reality check. I thought “You know what? I could go out for the heck of it and breeze through behind the scenes without having to put forth too much effort.” In the sport of wrestling there is no behind the scenes, when you step out onto the mat it is you and the wrestler across from you and no one else. The first few weeks, in any sport, are designed to weed out the weak and condition the athletes, it was at this time that I realized how hard this was going to be and I so badly wanted to quit. I would go home with a crushed feeling and with a look of despair on my…

We were winning games by large margins and growing some strong team chemistry. Every game was just important as the other for us. This wasn’t completely true when it came time for our doubleheader away game at Cascade. Everyone on the team really wanted a sweep against them, as we didn’t really like the opposing team. Not only did we have a bit of a rivalry, but we wanted to remain undefeated. I was very tired riding down to the game, as it was early on a Saturday morning. Still, I was pumped to get out on the field. During warm ups, everyone was a little over-confident that we were the better team. We watched the other team warm up and named all their flaws. One my teammates said, “Look at their pitcher. He hardly throws the ball forty miles an hour. This is going to be easy.” At this field there was a big black wall over left field. Another player on my team said, “I’m gonna hit top black wall by the looks of this pitcher.” My teammates weren’t wrong to think that they could hit the ball well on this guy. As the first game began, we picked up six runs in the first inning. This was topped off by us having our best pitcher on the mound, Caleb Blair. Blair threw a shutout, giving up zero runs all game. Our offense was clicking the the whole time, and we won ten to zero when it was final. Everyone on the team was expecting the same result in the next game. We were confident that we could easily get the upper hand, as we had another one of aces on the mound. This changed quickly though, as Cascade came out with a new sense of…

I never thought I’d be an All American. After losing my “sure thing” state finals match, I didn’t think I would ever achieve the title. The loss was a shock after going 38-1 on the regular season with my only loss stemming from a shoulder injury early in a match. I wrestled my way through states with pins, one over opponent who beat me the year earlier, up to face the Chilhowie senior in the finals. I had a three point lead in the first period before I, in non-wrestler vernacular, screwed the pooch. I pushed a move too much and got turned to my back and pinned in the first period.…

So the match started, I had to wait for my turn to go, but as the match went on I could tell some of my teammates were tired. We were winning 3-2, which means we had three wins and they had two. As I was waiting to get called for I was thinking how I was going to win my match, but I had a strange feeling that something bad was going to happen. But finally it was my turn to go wrestle. I got up and shook my opponent hand and the referee started the match. As we started to wrestle the crowd got louder and louder, I felt like I was in a football game that’s how loud it got. We were going at it, I took…

After I won my first fight my family was screaming and jumping for joy “he won he won”. I felt great, I was unbeatable, no one could touch me. I continued my professional fighting career for four more fights, and did not lose a single fight. I couldn’t believe that I had an undefeated fighting streak; it all reflected back to the day I was bullied and laughed at. After my last fight I decided that this was not for me, I wanted to do a different martial art style more of a Chinese…
