Personal Narrative: Niagara Sustainability Initiative
“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything (G.B. Shaw)”. Change is demanding, unsettling and often appears insurmountable- but I’m a firm believer that constant progress is the key to perpetual happiness.

This is certainly true in reflecting on the past two weeks here at the Niagara Sustainability Initiative, where I have completed my first sprint as the new Executive Director. Through the wonderful mentorship of outgoing ED Katrina Kroeze, I have been challenged, trained and geared up to get growing. It has certainly been a whirlwind of an education. So far, I have learned

There is no “I” in “Team”: I am constantly dumbfounded in the team here at NSI- both in my fellow staff members,

Change can be confronting and because of this we often try to resist it. However, we need change and we must accept it, for without change we cannot grow. This confrontation of change, resistance and final acceptance of change can be seen in the texts, " Drifters", " And a good Friday was held by all" by Bruce Dawe and 10 Things I hate about you" by Gil Junger. All three of these texts examine the process of change and the attitudes towards change.…

Last summer my family and I saw niagara falls, we put on yellow raincoats and rode on a tour boat, maid of the mist , up the river below the falls. As the water thundered around them, the guide told them that Anna Taylor a daring schoolteacher was the first person to ever ride over Niagara Falls in a barrel. My stomach turned upside down as I imagined her plummeting over the edge. Then I thought of our own teacher going over the falls in a barrel, I laughed out…

“And on your left you’ll see one of the tallest waterfalls in the world” the train conductor announced. Everyone shuffled for their camera to capture the moment. As the scene came into view the cog train was filled with the sound of a disappointed gasp, followed by glances to the vested instructor that read ‘are you kidding me’. The “waterfall” looked more like a miniscule stream than a massive landmark he told us it would be. Because we were near the top of Pike’s Peak, he wasn’t completely wrong. We were expecting something the size of Niagara Falls.…

“If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do” (Gandhi). The quote above explains that if one seeks social or personal change, both aspects must change together or not at all; they have a symbiotic relationship with one another. Change must be a cause and effect reaction, meaning that if a change is made, others will see the change and do the same. A thematic example of this would be the film Pleasantville. In the film, the society is one commonly described as utopian or perfection but in reality…

Change. From the first breath inhaled to the last, we change hundreds, thousands, of millions of times throughout the entirety. These changes may not always be so obvious, whereas others are blaringly distinct. Change is inevitable, especially as the environment, technology, economy, and people develop. Us, human beings, we are flexible, able to adapt and survive. However, as we adapt to these changes, we can not let these changes compromise our beliefs and principles by which we abide and hold close to our hearts.…

Karen was very scared and nervous when she went to YCC, the Youth Conservation Corp. It was an 8 week long paid youth work program during the summer in Isabella, MN in the boundary waters. She was really scared about the ordeal, but wanted to make some money. Some of Karen’s sisters went, so her parents thought she should go, too. Because Karen’s parents thought it was too much time and money to drive her, she had to get a ride with a complete stranger who was also going. Karen’s parents dropped her off a liquor store parking lot in Waverly, MN. Karen was scared and anxious waiting all alone next to Highway 12. She waited there for about half an hour with her her big backpack, as well as multiple changes of clothes including hot weather clothes, sleeping clothes, swimming clothes and…

Even generations ago, my family members realized how difficult it was to fit in time to see distant family members. That’s why since my great grandmother was around, we’ve spent one day during the holiday season participating in what we call The Progressive. As the tradition goes, each family is required to prepare one part of the traditional five course meal, the assignment of which rotates between the families each year. Each family prepares their part of the meal and hosts it at their home, allowing the entire family to visit everyone’s home and “progress” through one giant five course meal throughout the course of the day. It has, without a doubt, provided some of my family’s favorite stories throughout the years while allowing us to reflect on the year’s past with each other. Although it has been around since my grandparents were children, it has changed drastically since it’s inception those many years ago.…

People have been thinking about what ‘progress’ means for hundreds of years. We normally associate it with positive impacts and things changing for the better, which the majority of the time is correct. Edward E Cummings once said ‘Nothing recedes like progress.’ and in the poems ‘Unknown Girl’ and ‘Electricity Comes to Cocoa Bottom’ the poets agree with this statement. Alvi and Douglas present a negative view to the force of progress, we begin to question our understanding of progress, the benefits we gain from it and the danger that we lose what is most important when blindlessly pursuing it.…

In the atmosphere was where I started. Seventy five years I was there. A carbon atom in a carbon dioxide molecule was what I was. A Pinyon pine tree going through photosynthesis took me from the atmosphere. After I left my home, I converted into a tissue in a Pinyon pine needle. This was only the first part of the cycle, and I was going to the biosphere-plant.…

Change is Forthcoming. It is unpredictable, and yet easy to forecast. It is everywhere and a part of every single one of our lives.
