I sat on the piano bench, diligently moving my fingers to be precise and perfect. The piano, with all of its many working parts, were all working together to create a melody. As I flipped each page, I remembered the very first time I even opened a piano book.
My memento is my very first primer level piano book. To some people, this can be a new experience for them, a training tool for young piano students, or this book marks the beginning of their piano journey. Two years ago, during the seventh grade, we were preparing piano songs for a spring recital. Normally, all of my other classmates chose simple songs like “The Can-Can” or “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Of course, because I had years of lessons with Mrs. Taft, I wanted to challenge myself. So I chose to play the whole first movement of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. When the recital came, I was one of the last students to play my piece. When my turn came, I slowly walked towards the piano bench, having confidence because of the many hours that I have practiced. When I sat down on the bench, I began to play. Needless to say, at the end my classmates were happy that it was over because it was so long.
Music has been in my family for many years. My mother used to play the piano for a while and my dad always wanted to play a drum set. My oldest sister Molly has played the clarinet in Woodbury High School, and my other sister Janie has played oboe and violin.
Music plays a part in my family’s culture as well. During the Summer, sometimes Janie and I would go to my grandmother’s church and play piano for everyone. It became a tradition, and every Summer we would play piano in my grandmother’s church.
This first piano book works as a memento for me because it marks the beginning of music in my
