Personal Narrative: Race And Minorities In The Classroom
Race is something I have thought a lot about with my intentions on becoming a teacher. Ninety percent of our teachers today are white (Lee, Menkart, & Okazawa-Rey, 2008). With being white I will soon be apart of this standard, as well as being a stereotype of an educator because I am a woman. Going up I have only had white teachers and could count the number of male teachers on one hand. My elementary years where quite different then my high school years. I attended elementary and middle school in Texas and was brought-up in a very diverse school and large town. Thinking back on my education I remember walking through the hallways and seeing English speaking rooms and Spanish speaking rooms. Although, I had only white teachers there were plenty …show more content…
With me becoming a first time teacher I believe that it is extremely important to be open to new cultures. I want my classroom to be a place students feel welcomed and where they want to share about their own backgrounds with others. There are a couple ways I believe I could achieve these goals. One is by bringing in elements from other races, another could be information books or stories about other cultures, and lastly the most important is to have lots of knowledge on other cultures than my own. Having a diverse classroom would be much easier to learn about different races and cultures. But, living in a small town its much harder to understand and learn about race that’s how I think books and stories would help in a smaller town. In the book Beyond heroes and holidays, the author mentions how she starts off her semester with their students asking them to describe some of their beliefs about teaching and about how society works (Lee, Menkart, & Okazawa-Rey, 2008).I believe this would be a great way to teach, as well as gain a new understanding to the students’ viewpoints on race. This activity is also something that students can see their views evolving throughout the year and will defiantly be something I will be using as a tool in the

As I entered homeroom, I noticed I was the only latina present and that there was only one other person of color. At first this did not bug me, but as the week went by, I realized that we were the only two non-white students in the whole middle school. This made me feel very out of place, because I had never been the only Latina at a school, so I did anything I could to fit in. I was willing to let people make me their own personal dictionary, for inappropriate language, or to translate their readings. As a person of color, I was always taught to put others before me or else I would be seen as rude and uneducated, so I complied. Throughout my life, I have witnessed that many upper class citizens take their privilege for granted; they do not…

Being a military brat I was raised around all different kinds of race, religion, cultures, and so on. I know what it is like to be that one with different views and values. Relating to students is really important to me because I want them to always feel safe and comfortable in my classroom. Multicultural education is education that teaches the value of cultural diversity (Slavin, 2012). There are five dimensions that fall under multicultural education, which are content integration, knowledge construction, prejudice reduction, empowering school culture. These five dimensions are different strategies to implement diversity in the classroom, and using culture examples in our content area. I have learned many things through the five dimensions of multicultural education and will implement it in my classroom. In one of my journal entries I stated “I am really glad that I read up on this and now I can bring this to the table at our first meeting on Thursday “(entry 3). Reading all of this information I was able to bring information to our group meeting, and everyone was very grateful for the information. We have been working on a plan to implement throughout all of the classes, in our “6th Grade…

I used to gag at the thought of running eight hundred meters. There I stood with my heart racing, ready to run five kilometers. To everyone else, this was an unimportant meet that even the coach said he did not care about. It was for me, however, more terrifying than losing my mom in the grocery store when I was a child. My first meet and all I could think of was my speed or lack thereof. I did not have distance spikes. I did not have a muscle roller. All I had was my heart in my throat paired with running shoes. Since the day before, my blood pressure had been rising and continued to do so.…

Perhaps one of the most profound things about people, especially the millennial generation, is the incredible acceptance and adaptations found in the face of situation in which we encounter people who are different from ourselves. The ability to mesh with the people around me, and to be a part of a community comes easily to me. I have grown up in a one-of-a kind little town in the mountains of Colorado, and have always been surrounded by people who are both leaps and bounds away from me in our differences, and people I found plenty of things in common with. It is an expanded version of this diversity that I crave in my upcoming college experience. To be able to meet and interact with students from all different walks of life is a major priority as I move into the next chapter of my life.…

During my time at Dominguez Hills several of my classes have discussed white privilege. I remember first hearing this term in my Cultural Anthropology class. I believe that as a result of me being born caucasian many people carry prejudices and stereotypes against me just because of that. Typically, people judge me and automatically assume I come from a wealthy to do family, with an educated family, and a successful life. Although I have learned because I am caucasian there are some privileges I receive that others may not such as having a better opportunity to get a job, but I have also had tremendous struggles. Instead of growing up with a wealthy family we were considered poverty level, my parents were 7th and 8th grade dropouts with the…

To many, race is political. It’s something to re-blog or debate in Facebook comments. The sad truth, though, is that race is still an enormous issue in our society. Race is a part of our identity, and whether or not we are aware, it affects each and every one of us. Racial issues are particularly important in education because schools and teachers play a significant role in the socialization of children. In the field of education, a person’s race can play a bigger role than they may realize. Disparities in the field of education amongst lower-income school districts are particularly commonplace.…

Growing up I spent most of my childhood in Vietnam living an ordinary life. My parents were not risk-takers until they decided to quit their career as educators and move to the United States. Knowing that life in America will be challenging for immigrants, we mentally prepared ourselves to be fearless and get through every obstacle that is in our way. No matter how prepare we were, being a newcomer was frightful. When I first step foot on the land of promise, there was a mixed emotion suddenly rushed through me as a signal telling me life here will not be easy. We faced will endless obstacles and the language barrier is the most, the biggest challenge for us. Personally, I think learning a new language is difficult and requires a lot of hard…

Coming into this class I thought “what have I gotten myself into?” I got into the Middle College program because my counselor thought I should take it, meaning that I had no idea what classes I would be taking. When I found out that public speaking would be a class in this program, I was instantly anxious and wanted to get out as soon as possible. I thought everything in this class would be horrible because I’m not an outspoken person. My mindset soon changed when I realized that I have taken a quarter of a public speaking class in middle school. The thing that kept me going and helped me persevere through this class was the fact that I’ve done this before, so why not do this once again, but do even better than before. The new mindset really…

My educational diversity is linked to my high school where I attend an all-girls Catholic school. I have always attended a Catholic school since I was three years old, but I went out on a limb after I graduated junior high and decided to attend McAuley High School. I was given the option to attend co-ed high schools, but I decided that I wanted to get away from the male community for a little while. As much as I loved my decision for choosing an all-girls Catholic high school and getting away from the male testosterone from a Catholic grade school, I have been introduced to other girls’ point of views on Catholicism and other religions as well.…
