Personal Narrative: Rhoda's Home
It was just a normal night in the neighborhood, street lights on and all was good. Every night my wife and I sit in our living room and watch TV or just talk and look outside. There was very light traffic, I had only seen 2 or 3 cars that night. After a while we noticed that Rhoda had pulled into her driveway pretty late. I had forgotten to get my mail that day so I went out to the mailbox and waved to her. I went back inside and was going to get ready for bed. I took a quick shower and got my pajamas on.
As I was getting a drink from the fridge I hear some noise from Rhoda’s house, but I didn’t think much of it because I was so tired. About a minute later I hear screams that sound familiar. They were coming from Rhoda’s children, Michael

I quickly rushed the kids inside to my wife. All Michael was still saying was “He hurt my Mommy.” My wife hugged them and I tossed her shotgun on the table and told her to stay in the house with the kids. As she was telling Michael and Teresa that everything would be ok, I rushed out of the house. About 5 seconds after I walked out of the house, I see a woman collapse about 25 feet away from me. I ran as fast as I possibly could over to her, it was Rhoda. She was fully naked and soaked in blood. It looked like something from a horror movie, absolutely sickening. I knew it was my duty to help her, and despite all the blood i picked her up and brought her to my front porch. I went in the house and screamed to take the kids to a bedroom, kids should never have to see their mother like this. I went back outside and sat her on a the swing have have hanging from our porch. As I was about to run inside to call 911, I heard her mumble something. I turned around, she took a deep breath, and her last and said “Danny Padgitt. It was Danny Padgitt.” I grabbed a blanket and covered her with it and called the

When we pulled into the parking lot a police car began following us. My mom parked the car and we got out and began walking to enter the store. The policeman jumped out of his car and started yelling at us to come back, it was at that moment when I felt it: something bad is about to happen. Then another police car pulled up and two officers got out and told my mom to put her hands on the hood of the car. Then a k9 unit pulled up and anther police officer and a dog got out. The forty-two room house aims to provide comfort and support for families living through their worst nightmare. The charity provides this support by its network of staff and volunteers who prepare food for…

A few days after I went home with Phoebe, I ended up getting sick and my parents sent me to a hospital. I was trapped in that hospital for about a month with nothing to really do. You know what was funny though? The days practically flew by, right out of the window. Before I knew it, half a month had passed. I was slowly getting back my strength and everything else as well. I made sure I asked the nurse, who was taking care of me, to bring me malted milk. She was very kind to me, and chatty in a nice, friendly sort of way. It was a nice break from the typical phony people. Speaking of phonies, you should've seen my therapist. He came to me during this one session, started asking me questions in a very posh voice. You know, like he's really…

I want to start off by saying how excited I am to be joining A Place for Mom!! I started my career in health care nine years ago, originally working in nursing. I have worked in a variety of health care settings; Independent/Assisted Living, Memory Care, Long Term Care, Skilled Care, and the Hospital. I always knew I wanted to help people, seniors in particular. As a child I grew up living next door to my grandparents and did everything with them, this is where my love for seniors began. While working in the Hospital I came to the conclusion that nursing was not the way I was going to help people. I began working at an Assisted Living Community in Ames, Iowa as the Sales Director. I quickly learned that, that was how I was going to help people. For three years I got the pleasure of not only helping many families relieve their stress and fears for their loved ones care and safety, but I was also able to ensure their loved ones were able to live out their final years thriving. It was truly the most rewarding job, which brought me to A Place for Mom. At A Place for Mom I won't be limited to helping just the families that…

It was a surprisingly warm night during the summer. Everyone in the house was sound asleep in their rooms except for me. I was watching a show on the laptop in my room when out of nowhere I hear a bone chilling scream from the neighbor’s house next door. Before I knew it I was out of bed putting on my shoes to see what was happening. When I opened the front door I saw a bunch of other neighbors turning on porch lights to see what was going on too. What I saw next I could never un-see, it was the sweet old man that lived next door crouching over his blood stained wife. The problem with this image though is what he didn’t do. He wasn’t crying over her body in sorrow, nor was he standing in shock, instead his face was covered in blood and…

I come from a world where the only thing that is constant, is change. Changing states, changing houses, and changing schools. Unlike most other kids, I don't have a childhood home where I made countless memories, in fact, my earliest memories as a child all consist of cardboard moving boxes, along with unimaginably long car rides to foreign places. I don’t have a door marked to show how I've grown over the years, and I don't have a bedroom wall thick with paint covering over colors I chose as a child. Truthfully, often times when I was younger, and would see someone with these things, I was tempted to be envious and couldn't help but to think how lucky they were to have such stability. As a result of this, I spent a large portion of my childhood…

I remember when they kicked us out. It was only a couple of weeks ago. We Indians were minding our own business when the troops first came. And so here we are, walking through forests, woods, and plains on The Trail of Tears, looking for our destination.
