Personal Narrative: The Mars One Mission
Tens of thousands of people were prepared to leave their families, jobs and lives behind for a one-way trip to Mars.
The Mars One mission was aimed to send humans on a one-way trip to the Red Planet. One of the applicants was Lavanya. Her dream was to travel beyond the ordinary. As soon as she heard about Mars One, she immediately thought of applying. She was very excited and very keen on going. Her application was rejected citing that the quota for female volunteers had already been filled although the quota for male applicants were still open. Lavanya broke down completely. She promised herself that she will go on for the mission anyhow. Depressed she was sitting alone at a local park. Where she was talking to herself. A man sitting opposite

He lived in the hospital on an artificial ventilation for 97 days and later he had to continue physical therapy for at least ten years as he was completely paralyzed. My parents and my brother devoted their few years completely for his treatment. Today, my brother is a successful engineer working in the bay area. I learned that with dedication, determination and diligence we can achieve our dream in life…

I vividly remember the day of the Challenger Disaster. I was five years old and in kindergarten. My teacher, Ms. Epton, brought us outside to watch the shuttle launch; something many kids have to watch on television, but those of us living on the coast got to witness firsthand. I remember seeing the fiery glow of the shuttle, the gasps by the adults, and quickly being hurried back into the classroom. Not much was said about what had happened, it was not until later that I fully understood.…

Having the ability to lead others is essential in today’s world. For approximately the past two years, I have been the team captain of my high school’s robotics team, the Combustible Lemons. The team has competed in a number of regional, state, and international under my leadership. However, our robotics team wishes to be well rounded, so we do more than just build robots; therefore, we also commit ourselves to service for our community locally and abroad. Although being a leader can sometimes be difficult, I find great pleasure in being one because it is challenging, it is useful, and it is influential.…

Today was the day. The big day. My election for Lieutenant Governor of Division 2B for Key Club, an international service club, was today. Fear and anxiety pricked my skin in rapid movements emanating from every pore. I rehearsed my speech for the fifth time that day. Upon arrival at the Fairfax Library, I urged myself to remain calm. I quickly scouted out the other girls who were present; one girl was dressed professionally with a folder in her hand. I knew that was my competition. The girl spoke eloquently and genially, she radiated enthusiasm and a certain warmth that I did not have. With every question that was asked, she answered with a smooth smile and high-pitched tone that was dripping with sincerity. I bristled inside; I had just been slapped. I was shrouded in a cloud of anxiety and anxiousness. Suddenly, I was dragged from my reverie.…

Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

My personal mission statement is to be the best that I can be and work hard to help others be the best they can be. This statement is important to me because I have always found that I am at my best when I am helping people, whether its helping people at my job or at the grocery store. There are many things that fall into place with that, which to me, mainly includes education, because I am a student and I work in a college where I work with students and I listen to their problems and relate to them. So education is very important in general, but to me Community and Industry Education is very important and important to a lot of people. From a young age, I had an interest in the military. My grandfather served in the Navy during World War II, unfortunately he passed away prior to my birth, but my mother told me I was identical to him. I tried to follow in his footsteps of serving the community, first by becoming a volunteer fireman along side my father when I was sixteen. I believed that since my grandfather gave back to the community and country through fighting in the war, this was one way I could give back to my community. As I grew older the idea of going to college and having a civilian career became one that I found more compelling. Consequently, the thoughts of following in my grandfather’s footsteps and joining the military became less realistic. It wasn’t until…

So there I was, in Creative Writing, working on my project, when suddenly my name was announced on the intercom above my head, “Fiona Bailey, please come to the front office, Fiona Bailey.” I became surprised for a moment, then I stood up, left my classroom, and started speed walking through the halls towards the office. As I walked through the office doors and asked the front office what they needed me for, I noticed something. There were a bunch of people there that I didn't recognize, and a woman with sparkling brown eyes and a blue dress said to me, “You have just been chosen to go to Mars, and you leave in four days.”I froze, my mouth went dry, and all I could say was, “What?!” The woman smiled and repeated what she just said. Then after a few moments I asked,”How was I chosen to go, and why?” Clearing her throat, she explained that all the…

Most teenagers do not have a clue about what they want to be when they grow up. Most young adults also do not know where their path is in life. Even some full-blown adults are still trying to figure out their purpose. I was lucky. I knew exactly where I belonged from about the time I was seven up until now, at the decently young age of nineteen. I do not see my path changing anytime soon; in fact, I know it will never change. But, I did not just wake up one day as a child and know what my path was, while that would be impressive. Defining moments in one’s life defines who they are. There were lots of things I experienced in my life that made me realize my purpose, my absolute passion. I had four of these defining moments in my short span of…
