Personal Narrative: The Pastor Who Changed My Life
Three years later I met James Cox. He was living with his Mother’s Pastor Charles and his wife. We met on the job and became friends. James passed his physical for the fire department and he wanted to go out to celebrate. He took me to a very nice restaurant called Max House. Once we were seated he smile and said thank you for accepting my invitation. I brought you here to show you how much I appreciate you for working the extra hours and allow me to get paid for it. Few people would work another’s shifts and gave them the hours. That was the only way he could go through his training and still keep his pay. I had not minded doing that for him. While we sat in the restaurant he thanked me repeatedly for helping him. Then he told me about his life. He came to New York …show more content…
She moved to Ohio where her job was. They stayed behind and lived in Minneapolis with his grandmother. Then he moved here. He said I’ve never lived in a different state from my kids. We talked a while about my son and I. Then he told me he had a girlfriend. They met in college and fell in love. Now they live in different states. He said, “I don’t think this long distance relationship is working for me. I told her I did not feel we should continue to see each other.” I asked, “So what did she say?” He continued “She said just give it more time.” After a moment of silence, he took my hand and said, “We’ve worked together for years and you have always stayed in my corner. I feel you’re the only family I have here.” I smiled and thought well that good to hear. I’ll help you out when I can. The next day we were at work and he was taking out the trash. I was doing my paperwork. A woman who worked with us liked him a lot. She walked up and asked me why are you keeping your relationship a secret. You and James are a couple. I asked her what she was talking about? She said James told me and everyone else at the job you guys were a

Many people would say that growing up with parents who could not speak english would be to my disadvantage, but I disagree. Growing up I always believed it to be exhausting having to translate and never really feeling normal. I believed it to be dragging and many times protested against it, but besides it being tiring, I also felt embarrassed. Yeah embarrassed of having to deal with my parents and not being able to communicate with them like other kids did with their parents. As I grew older the issue only grew because at that point I began to resent them for putting me through what I believed to be embarrassing moments of confusion, but all of this changed when I finally realized that my parents did the best they could with what they had.…

This morning I attended a weekday mass at All Saints Catholic Church. The church itself is relatively large from what I saw. The exterior had many well-tended trees and bushes, with a sign pointing to the office, and a cross about six feet tall out front by a cement walkway which led to the entrance. The building itself was a taupe color with dark brown roofing and glass doors leading at the entrance. As I walked through the glass doors I was not greeted by anyone, so I followed what everyone else was doing. I noticed a holy water font in front of the doors leading directly to the room of worship. I watched as the casually-dressed Parishioners, all aged at least sixty-five years, and mostly white, middle-class women dipped their fingers into the font and then made the sign of the cross, before entering the worship area.…

My heart is pounding in my chest as I am in complete awe as I realize that finally she is coming. It is one of the most thrilling events that has ever happened to me in my entire life. I don’t think one can ever be completely ready for what I was about to endure as well as the pain my body was about to be put through. The pain begins to become more alarming as stronger waves of torment flows throughout my body down to the deepest core of my being. I have to say no matter how many books or classes I have taken, nothing could prepare me for what was about to happen next. It is not something that one could ever be mentally qualified for until it is actually happening. Fourteen hours of agonizing discomfort and yet we are still waiting for her to enter into this nonsensical, yet wonderful world. At that moment, I realize once she arrives she will be completely dependent on me.…

I never thought how interesting it would be to visit a different place of worship besides Christianity. Since the day I was born I’ve been a Christian and whatever anyone else believes in is wrong and that they are going to hell if they don’t believe in Christianity. About 3 years ago I visited the International Buddhist Progress Society a Buddhist temple in Naperville. Buddhism from what I learned looks more like a way of life or guidelines to it rather than a religion. Buddhism tells you how you could live life better but doesn’t scare you with the prospect of hell instead you live with ignorance. My own history with Christianity still made me doubt or fear the conquences of going to this temple. Part of me believed that I be punished by…

My first memory involving religion of any kind is when my grandmother was my temporary Sunday school teacher. This memory had absolutely nothing to do with reading the bible or praying or doing anything of that sort. I have no idea why I remember it either. The memory is of about four other kids and me sitting around the Sunday school table while my grandma sang a song about our ancestry and how it didn’t start with monkeys. The song went like this “I’m no kin to the monkey, the monkey’s no kin to me. I don’t know much about his ancestors but mine didn’t swing from a tree!” And it continued to repeat just like that. I will always remember this no matter what. Even now I can remember the exact flow of the song and the sound of my grandma’s voice.…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

Drive is something that tons of people have not yet to grasp. The word drive itself is just as powerful as its definition. Having a drive for something means there’s passion in what you’re doing. My drive is to get out of bed every day and be productive. It’s my drive that pushes me to get to work and push myself forward. Having that drive for something isn’t something I would want to let go of either. The problem today is that it’s that it’s hard to have a drive for something since it may take a while to achieve that goal. Sometimes I want to give up just thinking it’s not worth it in the long run, but an underlying drive kicks in that keeps me going.…

When I was younger, I typically received the things I wanted, things such as toys – being that I was an only child – and never worried about hearing the answer, “No”. I had this insane idea that the world revolved around me. Although I still had the concept in my head, that it was all about me when I was informed I would be an older sister, I knew that nothing would be the same. Before I was a sister, I never took anyone else into consideration, and I was never told to do otherwise. I was around four years old, when this news has changed my life forever.…

Throughout my life I have encountered many circumstances that have shaped me into the person I am today. I was born in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico. I attended school in Mexico all the way to second grade. In the summer of 2006 I moved to Cumming, Georgia. It was the hardest thing to do because I left everything that I care the most about. We lived in a trailer which was not the nicest place and in the middle of the forest. I started school at the beginning of August. I had always loved school so I was so excited for the first day. I knew it was going to be hard because I would have to conquer so many obstacles on the way. At this time the only English I knew was probably counting from one to ten and some of the colors. My Father knew some…

Throughout the past year I have endured several life changing occurances. One of my family members troubled through the treturous stages of cancer and unfortunately has passed at this time. If I have taken anything away from this, it is that family is the most important resource in a persons life. Without those people who tell you that you can, regardless of the circumstances, becoming succesful could be very challenging. After clearing my head, I was able to start thinking of a career choice that would make me enjoy going to work. I encountered an opening at a local CVS/Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician and applied. After being hired, I immediately fell in love with the surroundings, the people, the patient interaction, and the knowledge…
