My greatest influences are my parents and my brother. My brother suffered from Guillain- Barre Syndrome when he was eight. He lived in the hospital on an artificial ventilation for 97 days and later he had to continue physical therapy for at least ten years as he was completely paralyzed. My parents and my brother devoted their few years completely for his treatment. Today, my brother is a successful engineer working in the bay area. I learned that with dedication, determination and diligence we can achieve our dream in life…

Doing the dishes and vacuuming the house are simple everyday chores, but adult tasks are like stepping into a whole different world. I have had some experiences stepping up into the adult world, and it was not easy.…
My mother, sister, and I were driving down Highway 124 on a hot July day when my mom screamed and slammed on the breaks. Fear rushed through our bodies. Outside the car window, a short young African American man was launched into the air. As he came down, a loud boom sounded as his body helplessly rolled off the hood of the faint green Toyota Corolla in front of us. The man lay motionless in the road while we waited for what seemed like hours for the driver to exit the car. His red shirt and gym shorts were ripped. The driver of the opposing car threw the vehicle in reverse in a spasmodic action in an attempt to end the man’s life. The injured man made an effort to crawl onto the Wendy’s sidewalk, forcing his body up on the curb to evade the car. The driver drove up onto the curb and blew its tire, just barely missing the wounded man. Realizing the driver would stop at nothing, my mother drove her white suburban in front of the car, blocking the violent perpetrator from doing any further damage.…
The unnamed narrator is wearily perusing an old book one bleak December night when he hears a tapping at the door to his room. He tells himself that it is merely a visitor, and he awaits tomorrow because he cannot find release in his sorrow over the death of Lenore. The rustling curtains frighten him, but he decides that it must be some late visitor and, going to the door, he asks for forgiveness from the visitor because he had been napping. However, when he opens the door, he sees and hears nothing except the word "Lenore," an echo of his own words.…
Raven remembers when she was 19 (birth name Tatiana) as her parents drive her home from a New York gymnastics competition. This was the night that Odessa changed her life forever. The mob had sent Petrovik to execute the hit on her family. He easily murders her parents and leaves Raven for dead – brutally impaled on a spiked fence – or so he thinks. This is also when Raven hears the name responsible for the hit: Viktor (Odessa Pakhan or “boss”). Just before dawn something strange happens to Raven which causes her to lose focus and almost pass out – she transforms from an aggressive personality into a shy and vulnerable one with zero clue of her…

His father abandoned their family in 1810, and his mother died a year later from pulmonary tuberculosis. Poe was then taken into the home of John Allan, who lived in Richmond, Virginia. The Allens were his foster family and gave him the name "Edgar Allan Poe", but they never formally adopted him.The family sailed to Britain in 1815, and Poe attended the grammar school for a short period of time in Irvine, Scotland before rejoining the family in London in 1816. It was a ferociously gloomy day in the heart of Center City. The time of the observation was from 11:43 am to 12:43pm. Sandwiched between 15th street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard is the Philadelphia's Municipal Services Building and within the plaza of the building lies Board Game Park. Even in the rain, the park was festive. Upon arriving, it began to drizzle. The drizzle was light enough for me to sit by a statue that was composed of multiple bodies piled on top of one another. The noises heard ranged from rain dropping, to horns honking to people laughing or shouting. In the surrounding area of the Board Game Park is Love Park with its remarkable LOVE sculpture and fountain, which was spewing pink water in support of Breast Cancer Awareness…
Identity and personality are what makes each individual unique. Everyone has experimented different life periods which come with different life experience. After retaking the LASSI I have noticed a considerable amount of improvement as well as regression. In the beginning of the year, I vowed to myself that I would become a better student. I wanted to maximize all of my abilities in order to be successful. So, after I took my first LASSI and had my talk with Mac, I began to implement new strategies meant to help me accomplish my goal. First I had to deal with my anxiety. In past years I suffered with a lot of anxiety while learning math. I used to love math very much, however, this changed after my 6th grade year. Math became a foreign subject to me. I could no longer make connections and solve problems. As a result, my grades in math began to drop. As a person who is used to getting A’s and B’s on assignments, I had a difficult time in coping with my failure since it didn’t live up to my standards in the subject of math. My difficulty with math eventually caused me to have anxiety. I had carried this anxiety until my sophomore year in high school. It seemed as if no matter how hard I tried to concentrate on math tests my mind would always become blank. Luckily I had an…
Edgar Allan Poe was highly criticized throughout his life whether it was for his high achievements or his downfalls; he always seemed to be talked about. Poe was born in January 19, 1809; his mother died shortly after being abandoned by his father leaving him and his brothers’ orphans at an early age. Poe was taken by John and Francis Allan. With the help of his foster parents he was later able to attend the University of Virginia where he studied French, Spanish, Italian, and Latin, and had an excellent scholastic record. He soon was not able to pay for tuition and started gambling and drinking. His foster father would not pay his “debts of honors” therefore; he could no longer stay so he fled to Boston, his birth place. In Boston his writing career began. He first published an anonymous book of poems which he titled Tamerlane and Other Poems the credit was given to a Bostonian. In 1836 he married his cousin Virginia Clemm. His wife suffered from tuberculosis a disease that was killing her slowly. This affected Poe’s writing for all his poems and short stories were of death and hopelessness. During this time Poe continued to write it wasn’t until 1845 that Edgar wrote “The Raven” one of his most successful poems yet. Edgar Allan Poe’s life had been tough and his work demonstrated his struggle. He always wrote about darkness and mysteries. “The Raven” is a poem of death, despair, and self-loathing that a person endures after a loved one is lost. By the audience obtaining personal background information on Poe it helps understand his technique in his writings. Edgar Allan Poe skillfully uses symbolism in The Raven such as in the raven itself, the chamber, and the bust of Pallas (Goddess of Wisdom) to masterly get his thoughts across without the necessity of writing them.…

When I look at this picture, I see a tree trunk filled with butterflies only some of the Monarchs are colored. The fact that only the natural light highlights some of the butterflies is so alluring. Staring at the photo makes me ponder how many astonishing things our planet has to offer. Not only that but I think about all the marvelous things I see every day but look over because I am too focused on my cellphone or my fast paced life. The compelling hues of blue that pop through the trees gives the photo power because it helps pull focus on the butterflies in the center. The photo is of butterflies and it was so compelling when I first viewed it that I got butterflies in my stomach. I was in awe of the raw power and beauty in the photo. Emotions…
Most teenagers do not have a clue about what they want to be when they grow up. Most young adults also do not know where their path is in life. Even some full-blown adults are still trying to figure out their purpose. I was lucky. I knew exactly where I belonged from about the time I was seven up until now, at the decently young age of nineteen. I do not see my path changing anytime soon; in fact, I know it will never change. But, I did not just wake up one day as a child and know what my path was, while that would be impressive. Defining moments in one’s life defines who they are. There were lots of things I experienced in my life that made me realize my purpose, my absolute passion. I had four of these defining moments in my short span of…
