Depression can be a link in alcoholism. Alcohol is a natural depressant, meaning that when you drink, your brain naturally calms down, making a person kind of sad and more likely to act impulsively. Drinking is also proven to worsen depression instead of making it better. Depression is more than likely the trigger to the alcoholism. In teens and women who have had extreme depression, are twice as likely to start drinking heavily, and women are more likely to drink more than men when they are feeling upset (Alcoholism). “The remonstrances of my friends terminated in a row and I became a lone wolf” (Alcoholics, 3). This is a quote from the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous when he talks about how his drinking got in the way of his friendships, and he later talks about how his relationship with his wife started to fall apart. He says that “there were many unhappy scenes in our sumptuous apartment. There had been no real infidelity, for loyalty to my wife, helped at times by extreme drunkenness, kept me out of those scrapes.”. So while he was able to stay faithful to his wife, this shows that it was hard at times due to the amount of time he spent drinking and drunk. Some people are not as fortunate as him in the sense that their spouses stay with them throughout the tough struggle of regaining their life after alcoholism.
In some circumstances, the relationship will end because the road of recovery is long and difficult for both people in the relationship. One person writes about how he lost his kids and his fiance due to his lack of control while drinking. Around 80,000 deaths are caused by alcohol abuse each year, making alcohol abuse the third highest cause of death in the U.S.. That number does not factor in the almost 30 people daily who die because of drunk driving, and every 2 minutes, a person is injured because of drunk driving. Driving under the influence can cause people to lose jobs that are well paying. In a job driving truck, even one DUI charge can cost you the job, even if a company vehicle was not being driven at the time. This can cause a person to lose their source of income, making it difficult to feed their
addiction. Another problem in today’s society is the rapidly increasing number of teens that become addicted to alcohol. Approximately 7,000 teens under the age of 16 take their first drink every day, and those who begin drinking before the age of 21 are four times more likely to become alcoholics than those who wait until they are 21 (Fitzgerald). Making it hard for those kids to learn in school due to damage from alcohol abuse as an early teen. Alcoholism causes damage to every organ, including the brain (Fitzgerald). Also, it is harder to get out of the addiction when you start at an earlier age. The word “future” is defined as “the time that is to be or come hereafter” (Dictionary). So when a person starts to let drinking control even just a night, it can start to control their days, too. Controlling where their finances go, affecting their relationships. Alcohol can quickly begin to own one's future.
