Personal Narrative: The Taste Of Meat
The first perspective is of a carnivore’s. The taste of meat is one of many things in life that you can’t just recreate and expect it to have the same taste as the original. It has a unique taste and texture that only the mastication of flesh in between your teeth can satisfy. The tenderness, juiciness, and taste is what leaves people wanting more. Speaking from my past love for meat those were all the reasons I was head over heels in love with it. Although after I learned what these poor creatures have to endure for me enjoy such a delicacy I became a vegetarian. Some meat eaters know about what goes on in factory farms and how their food is processed but they continue to enjoy their consumption of meat. Although it is a good source of protein

Have you ever thought about how the food you’re about to eat was prepared? I know I rarely do, and many of us never pay any mind to what exactly is on our plate. David Foster Wallace’s essay will almost definitely make you ask yourself a few questions regarding meat consumption. His piece talks about the controversy behind killing lobsters and questions people’s general views on that matter, making his audience think about morality.…

Over the course of mankind, “meat has been closely associated with power and privilege—a staple for the gentry and a rare treat for the peasants” (Ruby, Heine 448). Linking back to Campbell’s 1940 beef soup advertisement, beef is illustrated as a “For MEN Only” diet. There is a possibility that the ad’s secret message conveys’ females as being vegans’ since “people’s perceptions of vegetarians found that women were more accepting of vegetarians than men (Walker, 1995)…” (447). Furthermore, “[women’s] attitudes toward vegetarians were predominantly positive, especially among those [that scored] low in authoritarianism (Chin, Fisak, & Sims, 2002), and that omnivores tend to rate vegetarians as good, but weak people (Monin & Minson, 2007).” (447). In other words, women and vegetarians are seen as inferior compared to those who eat meat – though this is seen a generalization/perception in society. On the other hand, vegetarians are also perceived as people that have “a stronger sense of virtue and morality in those who abstain from eating meat” (450), since they abide by “four principal reasons: concern for animal welfare, concern for the environment, concern for health, and disgust at the sensory qualities of meat (e.g. Fox & Ward, 2008; Santos & Booth, 1996; Worsley & Skrzypiec, 1998).” (447). For males,…

People tend to pay as much attention to food as they do brushing their teeth. I urge you, however, to take a step back, slow down, and really think about the food you eat. Eating is a complex thing. It may surprise you. And when you actually think about eating, you will eventually come to think about eating meat. This is no accident, meat has it's pull on humanity. And on our world. The choices we make matter. According to the best-selling author Jonathan Safran Foer, eating the meat we know "is certainly the single worst thing that humans can do to the environment"(457). Foer has been recognized by Rolling Stones Magazine and Esquire for his many accomplishments. In one of his works, "Against Meat", Foer covers the relationship of meat and…

Guests at the retreat center always ate meals in common, but they had an option to take those meals outdoors. Fortunately, it was chilly enough outside that no one else opted to join them on the porch, where they would have complete privacy. It is brutal and immoral to kill animals for food while there is a plenty of rich nutritional non-animal food. All animals are warm-blooded beings that have emotion and feeling therefore, they can experience fear, shock, and pain. Animal slaughter is a significant issue. “In the United States about 35 million cows, 115 million pigs, and 9 billion birds are killed for food each year” (Procon.org). How can so many people want to kill animals just because of their tasty meat? For example, bacon is one of the most common foods that every household has in their refrigerator. They usually have a crispy bacons plate for their dinner, and nobody can deny its delectable taste. But how many people actually know where the bacon comes from? First, the pigs will be delivered to the…

As a Chinese-American, my family expected me to help out at the restaurant while maintaining straight A's in school. But, it wasn't easy; every day, I would report to the restaurant after school and immediately start working. Inside the kitchen, I would pack all the orders into aluminum containers, place them into a brown bag, and insert packets of sauces and utensils. Burns and cuts were common due to the terrible and tearable aluminum containers. Outside at the front desk, I would answer the seemingly endless ringing phones. In many instances, customers had to wait either on the phone or at the front desk for me to find their orders on the computer, even after they showed me where it was on the menu. During lunch hours, the pressure was even…

Last year I was prit near 375 lbs and I knew something had to give. I have tried, low fat, low cal, counting macros and everything. I always still would gain! I would eat veggies and lean meat keeping under 1200 calories sometimes 800 when frustrated, I'd still wake up weighing more. Well to be honest, I believe the food pyramid is very, very inaccurate. I sometimes watch shows like my 600 lb life, for motivation for myself, because I need it still! I was to a point in my life I couldn't walk or stand more than 5 minutes! I'd have to sit on a chair to do dishes, I felt useless anymore honestly. One day something clicked and I seen a friend who posted about her 210 lb weight loss and started to read. I was blown away! I started it and I won't lie, I went out with a bang! Made a huge chocolate cake 13x9 and we ate half of it. I canned the rest. Within the first 3 days I was 5 lbs down! I couldn't believe it, without any exercise! People say oh you can't do that, but you can! You simply have to eat the RIGHT foods! 60% carbs isn't for us! That's what was set up by a group of people who think they know everything! They don't! But anyways if you want to learn how to eat the correct macros and learn to lose weight without worry, then this is for you! Ooh you have to give up some things! But tell yourself YOU'RE WORTH IT! I know what it feels like to hurt everyday and not be able to function and go out to the store cause you just cannot walk.…

In Defense of Food was quite shocking at first. In all honesty, it made me think I was going to die within the next week due to a heart attack triggered by all the junk I eat. Considering I myself indulge in processed cookies from the aisles of Stop and Shop, and steak tips that have been marinating in salt for two days, the film hit close to home. But in all honesty, I don’t eat that bad; in comparison to the Seventh-Day Adventists I do, but I think I’m doing alright.…

This past year I saved enough money to purchase my first livestock trailer. It is a bumper hitch trailer that can carry up to four beef animals. It is by no means fancy or new, but it works great when taking animals to county fairs, clinics, vet appointments, and other events. When traveling longer distances I have to support of many other beef producers if I choose not to use my own trailer (Not that my trailer could not transport long distance). This network of generous producers has helped me take calves to the Iowa State Fair, Stock Show University, and field days using their gooseneck trailers. My FFA chapter also owns its own livestock trailer that I have used.…

I eat meat and quite often and don't think much of it when I do but that’s what society has done to us. We don't think what we do, we think what everyone else thinks whether its where our food comes from or for example; if we should go to college. And this is what Thoreau was trying to say, that people are far to heavily influenced and that was 160 years ago. Now there are so many ways for people to control us, from news to music to our family.…
