Personal Narrative: In Defense Of Food
In Defense of Food was quite shocking at first. In all honesty, it made me think I was going to die within the next week due to a heart attack triggered by all the junk I eat. Considering I myself indulge in processed cookies from the aisles of Stop and Shop, and steak tips that have been marinating in salt for two days, the film hit close to home. But in all honesty, I don’t eat that bad; in comparison to the Seventh-Day Adventists I do, but I think I’m doing alright.
Pollan explains that the Western Diet comprises of meat, white flour, vegetable oil, sugar, and less fruits and whole grains. I must admit, I don’t eat many whole grains; I mean, why would I when I’m surrounded by fluffy Canadian White bread? However, I do try to eat a lot of fruit. Other than that, I too live by the Western Diet. I eat processed foods, and practically forty pounds of meat a day, but I know how to control myself. Some americans find their

Not too much. Mostly plants” is the example we should live by if we truly want to maintain our health through our diet. “Eat food” means eat meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, and grains that people have been eating for hundreds of years; eat food that our ancestors would recognize. Don’t eat “food-like edible substances”, or processed foods, all the time; keep them in moderation, or cut them out altogether if you can. “Not too much” means keep all food intake in moderation; try this by using smaller plates to keep portion sizes down, and stop eating before you feel full. Give your food some time to digest. “Mostly plants” is self explanatory, eat mostly fruits and vegetables. Also, eat all your colors of plants, for each present their own set of vital nutrients. For example, green plants (and fish) contain omega-3s. Omega-3s are vital to our health and cannot be produced by the human body; they have to be eaten. Also, with “mostly plants” in mind, try not to eat meat all the time; treat it as a flavoring or keep it for special

Furthermore, they claim the solution is to live on a plant based diet, eating to live and not living to eat. We can start by looking at some statistics. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Americans ate roughly about 120 lbs. each annually. By 2007, Americans were eating roughly 222 lbs.…

In the introduction, Pollan brings up a very good point about Americans and their views on dieting and eating “healthier”. Pollan explains the way that Americans went through a so-called “carbophobia” period in 2002, and how, unfortunately, this seems to remain true even today. The foods that American’s tend stay away from because of scientists and nutritionists devaluing…

This film elicits an array of reactions, and I believe that it provoked nearly every different kind of response in me. To begin, I was intrigued because it was so simple, thought provoking, and interesting that someone would devote an entire month and their general well-being to the accumulation of health information. This concept was downright insane in my eyes and I instantly wanted to know the end results. As the documentary furthered and his first week of ingesting McDonald’s food began, I became appalled. Around the third or fourth day, Spurlock vomited a fluorescent orange heap onto the ground merely from attempting to keep ingesting the food. As the long month in the film progressed, I became more understanding. I began to really understand the impact that what we put into our bodies has on us, not only pertaining to our physical health, but also our mood, sex life, and physical activity. I realized that there is absolutely no reason for us to be making the choice to make ourselves overweight from this food merely because it “tastes good.” While this case of Morgan Spurlock’s that was filmed for the movie was an extreme case in…

The book I chose to read for my summer homework was In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. Pollan has written many books regarding what to eat and how the foods we consume affect us. In this book, he opens with simple advice, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants” (Pollan 1). As straightforward as it sounds, Pollan quickly demonstrates how complicated this can be. Food is all around us. However, there are whole foods, stuff you’d find at a farmer’s market, and then there are the foods that line up the walls of our supermarkets, highly processed snacks and “foods” that contain a mirade of unpronounceable ingredients. Many of these foods processed foods, especially those that make health claims such as “low-fat”, “lowers…

I remember anxiously waiting for 9:00 o’clock so we could go explore the store. The grocery store could be kind of spooky during the night but this didn’t bother us too much because we would be busy playing tag or hide and seek throughout the store. The grocery store has seven aisles. Aisles 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are nothing special but aisle 6 is divided into in half by a variety of items as well as a candy box ( I don’t know what else to call it).…

Pollan states that the western diet is the root cause of health problems in countries that subscribe to it. He examines these countries, and the health consequences that they suffer due to their diet. He also provides examples of the alternative countries which focus on the traditional and cultural diet instead, resulting in comparatively better health. Pollan argues that the western civilization’s transition from whole foods to refined foods, from quality foods to quantity foods, from complex foods to simple foods and from culture food to science food is the main reason for the health problems that we have today.…

The book I read from the New Earth Archive was In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan. The book analyzed the foods we eat and talks about the traditional American diet. It says that this western diet is more harmful than beneficial despite the breakthrough in nutirionism. The reader soon learns that this growing obsession with nutritionism is ironically hurting our diet more than it is helping it. This obsession has led us to scientifically alter food to boost the level of vitamins and nutrients in our food; to make it “healthier.”…

As a Chinese-American, my family expected me to help out at the restaurant while maintaining straight A's in school. But, it wasn't easy; every day, I would report to the restaurant after school and immediately start working. Inside the kitchen, I would pack all the orders into aluminum containers, place them into a brown bag, and insert packets of sauces and utensils. Burns and cuts were common due to the terrible and tearable aluminum containers. Outside at the front desk, I would answer the seemingly endless ringing phones. In many instances, customers had to wait either on the phone or at the front desk for me to find their orders on the computer, even after they showed me where it was on the menu. During lunch hours, the pressure was even…

Last year I was prit near 375 lbs and I knew something had to give. I have tried, low fat, low cal, counting macros and everything. I always still would gain! I would eat veggies and lean meat keeping under 1200 calories sometimes 800 when frustrated, I'd still wake up weighing more. Well to be honest, I believe the food pyramid is very, very inaccurate. I sometimes watch shows like my 600 lb life, for motivation for myself, because I need it still! I was to a point in my life I couldn't walk or stand more than 5 minutes! I'd have to sit on a chair to do dishes, I felt useless anymore honestly. One day something clicked and I seen a friend who posted about her 210 lb weight loss and started to read. I was blown away! I started it and I won't lie, I went out with a bang! Made a huge chocolate cake 13x9 and we ate half of it. I canned the rest. Within the first 3 days I was 5 lbs down! I couldn't believe it, without any exercise! People say oh you can't do that, but you can! You simply have to eat the RIGHT foods! 60% carbs isn't for us! That's what was set up by a group of people who think they know everything! They don't! But anyways if you want to learn how to eat the correct macros and learn to lose weight without worry, then this is for you! Ooh you have to give up some things! But tell yourself YOU'RE WORTH IT! I know what it feels like to hurt everyday and not be able to function and go out to the store cause you just cannot walk.…

The first perspective is of a carnivore’s. The taste of meat is one of many things in life that you can’t just recreate and expect it to have the same taste as the original. It has a unique taste and texture that only the mastication of flesh in between your teeth can satisfy. The tenderness, juiciness, and taste is what leaves people wanting more. Speaking from my past love for meat those were all the reasons I was head over heels in love with it. Although after I learned what these poor creatures have to endure for me enjoy such a delicacy I became a vegetarian. Some meat eaters know about what goes on in factory farms and how their food is processed but they continue to enjoy their consumption of meat. Although it is a good source of protein…

In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he informs Americans about the western diet and believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 434). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionism, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads. In turn he provides his own rules for escaping the western diet as well as the idea of nutritionism set forth by scientists.…
