The objective of this documentary is to not only convince, but to show with scientific proof that there is a connection between diet and disease. The country’s three leading causes of death are heart disease, cancer and strokes. Billions are spent each year on major medical operations to help with these conditions. For this reason, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, if we stop eating meat based diets. Furthermore, they claim the solution is to live on a plant based diet, eating to live and not living to eat. We can start by looking at some statistics. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Americans ate roughly about 120 lbs. each annually. By 2007, Americans were eating roughly 222 lbs. each annually. That might not sound like a lot, but if you think about it, our bodies were consuming roughly 10 lbs. a month and getting along just fine. A hundred years plus later our bodies are consuming almost double the amount. The sugar intake in 1913 was about 40 lbs. and in 1999 it had more than tripled to 147 lbs. From 1909 – 2006 dairy intakes had doubled from 294 lbs. …show more content…
A graph is shown ranging from the years of 1927- 1948. Gradually the death rate (from heart attack and strokes) moves slowly up from 24,000 close to 30,000 right before 1940 when Germany invaded Norway. One of the first things Germany did was confiscate the livestock and farm animals. Therefore, leaving Norwegians to eat mainly plant based foods. The graph shows a dramatic drop in the cardiovascular disease death rate from 1940-1945 plummeting all the way back down to right around where it started in 1927 at a 24,000 death rate. After 1945 the Norwegians start to consume meat and dairy again and the graph of deaths gradually starts to
