Personal Narrative: Tortilla Chips
2008. A simpler time for most of us, and most likely you, the reader. I was definitely a simpler being, as I was a toddler at the young age of three. With my growing up, the downfall of my parent’s glory days came. They spent all their time with me: entertaining me, caring for me, and utterly disintegrating the tantrums that came with the wonder of life that was a child. However, all of that doesn’t matter, because on the oh-so-wonderful day of September 1, 2008, at 12:49 PM, I tried my first ever bite of tortilla chips with queso. I recall the screaming and tantrums that occurred every time we went out to eat. Kicking, punching, abusing my parents in general. I guess I was just a spoiled kid, but I simply refused to eat anything other than …show more content…
He sat our drinks on the table and set a pasty pale yellow mixture beside our basket of tortilla chips. At this time, I had stopped crying and was taking long, heaving breaths, like I had just been pushed under the ocean for five minutes and was struggling to breathe. As my father crushed a tortilla chip into smaller bits on a napkin and picked up a medium-sized shard of the remains. He pinched one corner of the miniature chip with his thumb and index finger and dipped it into the bowl of the liquidy thing sitting in front of me. As he lifted the chip out of the bowl, he told me to open wide. I did as I was told and he placed the chip inside of my mouth. I close my tiny lips around it, tasting every crumb. I nodded in approval and reached for another shard of the crushed chip. Ever since then, I’ve loved every bit of Mexican food and it has even inspired me to learn about Mexican culture. I am currently learning Spanish and hoping to celebrate Dia de los Muertos, also known as the Day of the Dead, this year. Eating Mexican food and examining their culture has led me to a richer, more exciting life, all thanks to one tortilla chip way back in

I am a coupon person. I love coupon via mobile and with limited information. I just brought a piece of furniture that normally cost $3800 and I got this furniture for $1200 from JCPenny’s. I don’t really look for coupons unless I am going to that store. I must admit that I love on particular fast food chain named, Chick-Fil-A. I actually look for those coupons. I have received free minis, and other free things from Chick-Fil-A. At the same time, I carry Michael Kors products, which represent a particular status. I have a $400 dollar purse that I only paid $100. I even have a Michael Kors cell case, but no-one can tell it is a Michal Kors, but it make me feel a certain way. Corn hole was the second thing I tried at Fall Fest. This game is not the most thrilling thing in the world. There were several people that were waiting to play because it was pretty much the only thing to do. I am not very good at it, which is weird because the only thing you have to do is toss a bean bag onto a wooden box that has a hole in it. I have never understood the corn hole rules so that didn’t help. The way to get points is by making it in the hole or if the bag stays on the board, but I don’t know how the scoring works. My bags always missed or bounced off the board anyways. I was going to play volleyball after corn hole, but there was no one else playing it so I just watched a bunch of other people play corn hole. Countless other…

I remember the one day, it was early in the morning and I was going to my basketball game. We stopped to help this lady get home by giving her a ride. Then once we dropped the lady off at her house we drove off and had to stop for some deer to cross the road. Once the deer crossed the road, we were finally off to the game, we made it to the game with time to spare. With the time we had to spare I had some biscuits and gravy, and i devoured them in seconds and had some orange juice after.…

Los Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday spanning two days and three nights. During this holiday, families gather to welcome the souls of the people that have died. They see these days as crossroads between the living and the dead. The Day of the Dead originates from ancient Aztec culture and although Christianity has influenced this celebration over the years, the Mexican people, like the Aztecs, still exhibit no fear of death and it is talked about openly and in everyday life. Ofrendas are a traditional element in celebrating the Day of the Dead; even their symbol of death, the calavera, helps to show that there is no denial of death in this culture. This is witnessed especially throughout the festivities.…

As a Chinese-American, my family expected me to help out at the restaurant while maintaining straight A's in school. But, it wasn't easy; every day, I would report to the restaurant after school and immediately start working. Inside the kitchen, I would pack all the orders into aluminum containers, place them into a brown bag, and insert packets of sauces and utensils. Burns and cuts were common due to the terrible and tearable aluminum containers. Outside at the front desk, I would answer the seemingly endless ringing phones. In many instances, customers had to wait either on the phone or at the front desk for me to find their orders on the computer, even after they showed me where it was on the menu. During lunch hours, the pressure was even…

In the western area of the U.S, the most common Spanish speakers are Mexican, making their food the most prevalent. This has created a disconnect in the minds of the residents because they automatically assume any Spanish person or Latin food they come across is automatically from Mexico. In reality, Mexican food is uniquely known for its heavy use of spice and the main ingredient in their dishes, is corn. Even the candy is coated in a layer of chili. In an article with detailed facts about Mexico it is stated “Mexican candy is not only a piece of Mexican food, but also a piece of Mexican art. The “Calaveras de Azúcar”, or sugar skulls, are specially prepared for the Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead” (Mexican Food 7). Dominican or Puerto Rican however, have a strong Caribbean influence so their food is more focused on flavor then spice. The island herbs are combined into a paste called sofrito, the main seasoning that makes their food so distinguishable. Other popular foods are mango and plantains, the green banana. Spain, the country that every other one is supposed to have descended from, would not be seen as typical Spanish food. The people eat in small portions called Tapas that contain a huge amount of sea food because of the ports all around the country. Just by looking at how drastically different the foods of some of the countries are, it is hard to…

Culture is one of many common denominators that portrays the beliefs, customs, values, and languages of modern day society. Furthermore, culture serves as a defining principle of how people live and what type of person they develop into throughout the infinite process of time. Another essential aspect of culture is that it helps outline a definite sketch of the learned and shared human patterns that surround numerous civilizations. Deriving from a pre-dominantly Mexican heritage, one of the most dynamic and influential aspects of Hispanic culture is “Dia de los Muertos.”…

The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos in Spanish) is a holiday celebrated mainly in Mexico and by people of Mexican heritage (and others) living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and relatives who have died. The celebration occurs on the 1st and 2nd of November, in connection with the Catholic holy days of All Saints ' Day and All Souls ' Day which take place on those days. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. Observance of the holiday in Mexican-American communities in the United States has become more important and widespread as the community grows numerically and economically.…

To begin with, when I was a little girl I lived in South Central Los Angeles, California with my two parents whom the names are Arturo Ferreiro and Cynthia Contreras. We all lived in one small pink house with my grandmother named Yolanda Contreras. My parents worked so hard to move from the ghetto. My mother once said to my grandmother “ I don’t want my daughter to distinguish the negativity.” There were so many crimes around our area and honestly, it was dense to walk around the neighborhood without having a doubt that something was going to happen. The helicopters were always around our neighborhood which made our family in danger. In 2004, I attended to a school named 107th Street School and everyday after school, my grandmother would pick me up from school. After a vigorous day at school, my grandmother would ask me “ Leslie do you want popcorn?” I’d respond with “ Yes grandma I’d be really appreciated if you bought me popcorn.” Every time she would ask I’d get excited because we would get closer to the lady with the red shirt across the street, the smell would get stronger. The taste of the popcorn was so delicious because it wasn't just popcorn, but it…

I remember when my mom met me in the kitchen one day after school and told me she would clean out the kitchen cupboards of junk food and supervise my meals and snacks. In a way I was relieved that I would not have to do this on my own. I had thought about losing weight and getting on a diet before, but never really went through with anything. Then it started. She weighed me and took my measurements, cooked lean meats like fish and chicken, accompanied them with fresh salads and vegetables, and made me drink lots of water with lemon. Every night, she made and packed my lean lunches, but she also continued to cook regularly for my other sisters and dad. The fact that I was being singled out is an entirely different essay.…
