Personal Narrative: Woodberry Kitchen
Brunch this week was at Woodberry Kitchen. Hard to believe this place has been around over ten years! Chef Spike Gjerde and chef Lou Sumpter are always serving up some some local, seasonal concoctions that folks (including myself) can’t get enough of. In 2015 Gjerde took home a James Beard Foundation award. Sumpter a Maryland native was also recently honored by Eater for up and comers in the food industry under 30.

I’m typically very pleased when I come here although I prefer to go for dinner.

The potted vegetables were awesome, I loved the wood roasted eggplant dip and will be recreating soon. I’m cutting back on dairy, but had to give the crab pot a try and it was worth it l! There was a perfect balance of lump crab meat and cream cheese, delicious!

There was a big debate on scrapple at the table! Where is it most popular (Philadelphia vs Baltimore), should it be thick or thin cut, or should it be avoided altogether. Personally, I love scrapple and thought it was a stable in most Baltimore households. I like my scrapple a little bit thicker than what i was served. It was still somewhat addictive all the flavors were all there, and reminiscent of my childhood when my mother would fix me a scrapple and egg sandwich before school.

How do you like your scrapple?

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

The Cheesecake Factory, I once believed that the establishment would be a bakery that primarily sold cheesecakes, sweets and such. Although, I’ve never heard much about the restaurant, or what it actually was other than people are familiar with the establishment and only comment on the cheesecakes. Yet, I had not known that that was the place I was dining in, I only believed under presumption of its name that we were going to eat at some other random place when I walked through the doors of the restaurant. Now the reason I say random was the fact that this place was not like how I imagined the praiseworthy Cheesecake Factory to be at all. My expectations of this place was exactly how Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory felt and as colorful as Tim Burton’s remake of Alice in Wonderland was.…

The recipe consisted of few ingredients and it was simple to develop their flavor profile, but to create a flawless finished product was challenging. The kitchen added difficultly because was not set up for a baker, this was undeniably a savory chef’s kitchen. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the all the equipment necessary for baking on such a large scale, so I had to improvise several techniques.…

I remember anxiously waiting for 9:00 o’clock so we could go explore the store. The grocery store could be kind of spooky during the night but this didn’t bother us too much because we would be busy playing tag or hide and seek throughout the store. The grocery store has seven aisles. Aisles 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are nothing special but aisle 6 is divided into in half by a variety of items as well as a candy box ( I don’t know what else to call it).…

My best Pecan Fest experience was last year. I rode the Zipper with Austen and Hayden for most of the time. My friends and I played all weekend and had fun. We bought lots of confetti eggs. They were very useful when we used them on other people. We also bought silly string and sprayed lots of people. We went on the Zipper at least 10 times. I went on the MI twice. I went on the Pharos Fury a couple times. I ran around the yard with my friends and we rode on lots of rides. I helped my mom with her booth and I got a lot of people to play the game. I also watched my little brother perform on stage. After that I ate some food and then went one the Zipper. I felt so sick after. I got some water and I went home. The next day we went back to the…

This is a picture of me at my favorite surf spot Kona Inn. I was introduced to this spot by my gregarious friend Logan Mccollum. During the production of his bodyboarding video I fell in love with the wave. At first, I was too frightened by the shallow, very jagged reef but soon I began to grow very passionate about these sort of waves. My friends and I would surf this spot and feel like it was our second home. People were hardly ever in the water and most that knew about Kona Inn knew how secret people kept such a discretion about it. Over the years I surfed this spot, it always amazed me how other spots wouldn't have any waves but Kona Inn would. Whether there was waves or not and Kona Inn, Id always have fun reminiscing how some of the best waves I've ever seen came onto this little reef.…

As a Chinese-American, my family expected me to help out at the restaurant while maintaining straight A's in school. But, it wasn't easy; every day, I would report to the restaurant after school and immediately start working. Inside the kitchen, I would pack all the orders into aluminum containers, place them into a brown bag, and insert packets of sauces and utensils. Burns and cuts were common due to the terrible and tearable aluminum containers. Outside at the front desk, I would answer the seemingly endless ringing phones. In many instances, customers had to wait either on the phone or at the front desk for me to find their orders on the computer, even after they showed me where it was on the menu. During lunch hours, the pressure was even…

Hi, guys today I wanted to tell you about how me and my friend had so much fun making pumpkin rolls cake. Well my older sister and my mom helped to. I love to bake along with showing, excpecially with other people. I'm not going to tell you the recipe but I still going to tell you about them. So lets get started. We were going over to her house to hang out and we decided to make pumpkin rolls. The first batch we made wasn't the best but it was still really good for our first try. Then we looked to see if we had enough to make a couple more batches, and we did. On the second batch I turned on the mixer to high and made the flour go every where. We all started to laugh and we couldn't stop. It was all because I forgot I couldn't turn it up that…

Over the summer, my parents and I took a rousing vacation to Northern Alaska. As a young girl, I always yearned to visit Alaska and viewing its vast mountain range and nonpareil wildlife. As there wasn’t much opportunity to see that in the monotonous New Jersey. I have always considered hiking and viewing natural pulchritude as a form of merriment. Case in point, my father and I hiked in the Grand Canyon, approximately three years ago , feeling like diminutive ants astray in the colossal canyon. Likewise, last year my parents and I hiked the foothills of Yellow Stone National Park, our shoes strewed with desiccated sand that were deprived of water. We missed the gargantuan canyon and the repugnant odor of sulfur from the geysers. I immensely enjoyed the hiking we did in Alaska. Nevertheless, what caused me to be aghast in reverence occurred near the beginning of the 2nd day of my trip. As an illustration, my parents and I were traipsing in front of our cottage early…

I am Lucas “Luke” Putnam, and I am completing my practicum at a Mom and Pop home-style family restaurant, White’s Restaurant, in the charming town of Belmont, North Carolina. My job title is “Jack of all Trades.” In this family owned diner, I am required to do whatever is necessary at that point in time to serve the customers efficiently and personally; therefore, I help in all aspects of the diner. I work as a busboy, dishwasher, waiter, server, hostess, line prep, and even the chef. My relationship with my supervisors, Carroll and Mary White, is like being a part of the family in which they are my parents. We are free to discuss all topics among each other and with the customers. After gaining the acceptance of the “regulars,” they became…

Tonight I had dinner guests and my kids had requested Pizza! I usually make homemade pizza crust and I must have been distracted. I realized I had added *way* too much sugar. I tried my best to remove it, but it was starting to mix with the flour. I was in a time crunch, I had dinner guests arriving soon and I had doubled the batch. I didn't have enough ingredients to start over. What should I do? I thought if I added garlic it might disguise the sugar. Even as I rolled the dough onto the pans, I could smell the sugar. It looked almost like a large sugar cookie with a hint of garlic. After it was done baking, I tasted the crust. Not too made, but I could tell it had extra sugar.…
