In the years preceding the Vietnam war a new disease has appeared in the United States in the future it will be known as the HIV/AIDS virus. The AIDS virus had quickly spread due to it being unknown and virtually undetectable during that time. For those who were infected they felt increasingly isolated. Prejudice and fear had overtaken people’s emotions resulting to stereotypes in many levels of society. One of the early pioneering AIDS activist was Elizabeth Glaser who herself had contracted the AIDS virus during her pregnancy passing it on to both her children resulting to the death of her daughter, which was the spark for her fight against the epidemic. Elizabeth Glaser took a stand by speaking out about the discrimination people affected with the virus struggled with, she also talked about the government’s lack of action and what they could have done, finally by founding “The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation” in order to provide for those with HIV.…
On August 19, 1992, during the Republican National Convention in Houston, Texas, Mary Fisher, a 44 year old HIV positive mother of two kids and a rich Republican, delivered a moving speech to bring awareness to the American public about the stigma and danger of HIV and AIDS in the 90’s. In 1992, millions of Americans were infected, and many of these people were ashamed to publicly speak up for themselves. Fisher knew that in order to change federal policies and reverse the stigma of HIV/AIDS we need to coalesce as a nation. Mary Fisher’s speech is informative, passionate and brave; her speech calls on the Republican Party to act and understand that HIV/AIDS is a present danger that does not discriminate against the color of your skin, your sexual orientation or whether you are rich or poor.…
HIV illness signifies a continuum of infection that starts with a concise severe retroviral disease that normally changes to a long-lasting and pathologically dormant infection. If treatment is not provided right away this disease in the end develops to immunodeficiency disease identified as AIDS. If left untreated the period connecting the HIV Illness and the progression of AIDS fluctuates, alternating from a couple months to several years with a projected average period of roughly 11 years (CDC, 2011). Research displays that the viruses are taking an increasing toll on girls and women in the United States. The statistics showed women with AIDS rise 8% to 27% from 1985 to 2005 and these figures are even larger worldwide…

HIV/AIDS is one of the deadliest diseases in the world. Although millions of people are afflicted with the disease throughout the world, this pandemic affects the continent of Africa the most by far. In Africa, the disease is increasing at an alarming rate. Even though increased effort is put in around the world to prevent AIDS, this widespread disease has increased significantly in the past decade. The toxic ailment continues to spread with a disturbing force and it has taken a long time to finally slow it down. In the late 2000’s, approximately 40 million people around the world were living with AIDS or the HIV infection, a significant rise from the 35 million diagnosed with AIDS in 2001 (Bertozzi).
