My home has been a place where, in order to receive what you truly desire, you must earn it and nothing may be taken for granted. My family has taught me strong moral values and ethics such as being loyal, honest, and to be a positive role model with a passion for life, and I always took that to heart. Growing up, I was incapable of participating in most of the activities my friends were able to due to my families financial issues and a select amount of my family member’s health issues. Because of these circumstances, my parents always preached to me that I should never expect items to be handed to me but to work hard for what I want. The older I became, the more I understood and grew fond of what they had taught me. Upon entering high school, everything I have learned began to become a part of my life and an instinct to me. I was aware of how to work hard to become a varsity Water Polo player, attempt to keep my family together during our most devastating crisis with hardly any help and to manage my school work. High school has molded me to become a responsible man at a young age, while my peers were able to grow up as regular teenagers since they did not have to stress over the responsibilities that I had to endure.
Being athletic and playing sports has always been a part of my lifestyle, but the sport that really intrigued me was Water Polo, which has always been my passion.
Carlsbad High School has always been known for their water polo because they are undefeated champions for nine continuous years, which was something I wanted to be a part of. My freshman year, I told myself and the coaches that I want to be part of their legacy and I would train extensively in order to prove myself to the team. Soon after the tryouts, the coaches told me I

You earn recognition, all your playing time, and a starting position through hard work. I grew up playing all kinds of different sports. I played baseball, football and later in life I started to swim competitively. In each case, I had to learn to take the responsibility to do my part—for myself and for my teammates. Practice was mandatory and took priority over other interests of mine. This was hard for me, since I missed out on school dances, family activities and other fun events because I had to be at practice everyday. It also forced me to learn good time management skills as I started to balance school, a social life, daily two-hour practices and games on the weekends. The coaches can only teach so much and, while they tried, couldn’t force me to learn my plays or study in my off time. I knew my hard work was paying off when my coach would say, “Good job Gunnar, I’m proud of you!” That one sentence made me realize that my hard work had paid off and that I should continue to work even harder, not only in sports but also in everything I…

From the day I could walk, I was involved in sports. From playing tee-ball in the backyard with my dad when I was three, to trying three new sports as a senior, athletics have been an integral part of my life. In my elementary school days, I tried every sport that was offered through the Jefferson Parks and Recreation. This included baseball, football, wrestling, karate, soccer, and tennis. Through middle school, I dropped several of these sports to focus on my two favorite sports, baseball and wrestling. Training for these two sports never ended and most of my time was spent either on a baseball field or on a wrestling mat. Entering my high school years, baseball and wrestling were the only sports I competed in. By my sophomore year, I was…

My family did not let me renounce my dream, and they helped me prepare for the next year’s tryouts by driving me to club tryouts, countless lessons, and intramurals. Daily, my brothers and I would practice in our backyard just tossing the ball around. Every day, I would improve, serve the ball further, and my confidence would grow. My dad encouraged me to attempt to play for club teams, and even if I didn’t earn a spot on the team, at least I would gain practice and experience. I tried out for four club teams, and I didn’t earn a spot on any of them, but I believed my skills were improving. By chance, I found one club was having their tryouts much later than all the others, and when I showed up, I was the only one there. They asked me to play for them, and I agreed, but they resulted to be private lessons. Every Monday, I would practice for a couple of hours with a student coach. Occasionally, I would play scrimmages for other teams. Most importantly, I enjoyed those weekly practices. In the final weeks, leading up to the school tryouts, I attended a variety of intramurals and camps. I enjoyed playing with other girls, and I enjoyed the sport. Even though I was usually the weakest player, I enjoyed playing the sport more than winning. When the time came, I was confident in my abilities and prepared to earn a spot on the…

The beginning of my freshman year in high school changed my life. I had set many types of goals for myself this year including making friends, helping others and being a part of the most incredible organization, Blue Guards. Blue Guards is apart of the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at Oxon Hill High School. Blue Guards was not only a drill team, it was a family, a family of girls and boys working together, leading others, having discipline, and respecting each other as a team. Walking into the first day of school knowing I was going to be part of this team made me light up like a light bulb.…

As my childhood gradually transitioned into my adolescent years, I was old enough to realize my dreams of becoming a professional athlete wouldn’t serve as a career path. By the time middle school rolled around, I slowly narrowed down by ambitious list of activities to the one I was most passionate about: soccer. Through the first awkward relationships, real homework assignments and horrifying threat of detentions, soccer was always something I could look forward to.…
