Historical background of issue: Gambling has been around for many years. Much like today’s society, gambling became a problem that had to be dealt with in the Middle Ages. Countries were forced to ban gambling for their soldiers, because they were so wrapped up in gambling that they could not carry out their duties (“History of Gambling”). Gambling creates many problems in our society today such as addictive behavior and bad habits, illegal activity, and damages the economy.
Thesis: This house believes that Gambling should be banned because of the problems it creates in our society.

Gambling takes money from people and instead of using money in a positive way such as helping a charity or donating it to an important industry, it is essentially thrown away in the hopes of getting rich quickly. The removal of money from other industries often causes businesses to go bankrupt, therefore creating more unemployed people. The unemployed people have no money and nothing to support a family. Gambling ruins our economy because people don’t realize that spending all of their money on the wrong things hurts our economy. People don’t have a problem spending thousands of dollars at a Casino, but will quickly get upset when gas prices rises ten cents per gallon or their child needs more school supplies. One mother told me she was very upset that the school system did not completely cover a field trip and that it would cost her $15.00 for each of her two children. She called the school and complained. This same person had no problem the night before losing $1,300.00 at the local casino ("A Good Way to Wreck a Local Economy”). Casinos don’t encourage non-gaming businesses to open nearby. The people who most often visit casinos do not wander out to visit other shops and businesses. A casino is not like a movie theater or a sports stadium, offering a time-limited amusement. It is designed to be an all-absorbing environment that does not release its customers
