I chose this topic because texting and driving has become a recent issue in today's society.
Many people don’t realize how much damage this causes. Many teens, as well as adults, have formed a habit of using their cell phones while driving their cars. One of the dangers of texting and driving at the same time is the attention it takes away from the road. A driver who is focused on looking at their phone is not paying enough attention to others cars or what is happening around them. Something as simple as an animal running out in front of their car, can cause serious damage to the vehicle and also cause the drive to swerve and potentially hit another car. If you are not planning on paying attention to the road, why drive?
Many accidents are caused every day by people trying to drive while either texting or using their cell phones. Over 6,000 people are killed each year in accidents involving drivers on cell phones. About 10 percent of drivers say they sometimes talk on cell phones while driving, and that figure is growing each and every day. People who are using cell phones are using one hand to drive and sometimes they can’t control their vehicle because they are too busy talking on the phone or
texting.
On the other hand, drunk driving in the U.S. is a major problem also. It is the leading cause for teen deaths in America. In this day and age, driving while intoxicated or under the influence has become America’s deadliest crime. There were more than 11,000 alcohol-impaired deaths in 2008. Impaired driving causes you to have a much slower reaction time than you normally would, or you could even fall asleep. So is it really worth it?
I wouldn’t necessarily consider one to be safer than the other because both of these are very dangerous acts. However, studies have proven texting while driving to definitely be much more dangerous. The more comfortable people seem to get with texting while driving, the more those death rates seemed to increase from doing so. By seeing how much damage doing these things causes, my eyes have really been opened. I will admit that I have picked up my phone a couple times while driving. I would sometimes feel so confident that nothing bad would ever happen to me if I only did it for a second or two. After reading a lot of these stories, my view on this has completely changed. I now no longer even consider using my phone while driving because it only takes a second for a fatal accident to occur. I would never want to risk putting my life or anyone else’s in danger.
Either of these acts can result in death of the driver, passenger, or an innocent bystander. If you can use your phone or drink alcohol while driving, you are basically saying that you don’t care about your life, or anyone else’s. I personally think people who text/drink and drive are selfish because you are voluntarily taking your/someone else’s life. No one ever considers the fact that people have family’s to go home to. I feel that these situations have an even greater impact on the families of the people involved in the accidents. In most of the articles that I read, they stated that parents were called at 2 or 3 in the morning to come to the hospital and identify their child’s body. In my opinion, no parent should ever have to bury their child. Most of the people who died yesterday had plans for today; don’t take life for granted.
