America has a bright past involving foreign aid, specifically in the 1920s. In early 1918, President Woodrow Wilson went before Congress and announced a plan he called the Fourteen Points. In summary, they were fourteen goals of the United States in the peace negotiations …show more content…
after World War I. They included public negotiations between nations, freedom of navigation, free trade, self-determination for several nations involved in the war, and the establishment of an association of nations to keep the peace. Wilson mentioned the “association of nations”, this later became the League of Nations, which ironically, America did not join. During WWII America was in alliance known as “Big Three” with Soviet Union and Great Britain, others were involved, but those three were the most powerful members. Shortly afterwards, America ended up joining the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) and the USAID (United States Agency of International Development).
One huge pro for foreign aid is help during war. Everyone might think America is all strong and unstoppable, I’m not to say we aren’t, but we possibly could not have accomplished certain things during war times if it wasn't for the help of other countries. When asking Webb City High Schools well respected American Heritage and College History teacher, Mrs. Cindy Dagnan, what ways has America helped and received help by other countries, her response was “Hello, WWII!!!”. During WWII we helped Great Britain and the Soviet Union defeat Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Germany party. We helped even though we were in war with Japan. Soon after defeating the Nazis, the main focus turned towards the Americans vs Japan. Great Britain and the Soviet Union help defeat Japan. This is just one of the many prime examples of America’s involvement benefitted.
People have always thought that America is the only country to giving assistance in the act of natural causes.
After a mile wide tornado ripped through the soul of Joplin, Missouri, a country by the name of United Arab Emirates (UAE) jumped into action. UAE assisted Joplin by helping fund over 2,000 high school kids get Apple MacBooks for school. UAE also spent over 5 million dollars to help rebuild sections in Mercy Hospital. Millions also believe that America is the most giving country in the world, but they aren’t. According to Robbie Couch actrical over countries giving, America didn’t even crack the top ten of the most giving countries. Couch also states that “in 2013 the U.S. gave nearly 32.4 billion dollars in development assistance, that only 0.19 percent of its GNI (gross national
income)”
Finally, many do believe that America does have tendency to get too involved with other countries. Some do believe that the WWII America should have never gotten involved, America was in war with Japan not Germany. But still helped defeat Germany. It did not affect the U.S. poorly, other than having thousands of soldiers die, it actually helped the U.S. get out of the Great Depression. In 1955, America got in the most pointless war, the Vietnam War. South Vietnam was on the verge of being taken over by the Communist country of North Vietnam. America thought it was their responsibility to get involved with this, because they feared the fact of communism spreading throughout south-east Asia. This war was protested more than any other war in the history of the United States of America. Everyone believed that America had no business getting involved with this war. (History Channel). This is why America should have restrictions on aiding other countries, sometimes it becomes too intense.
America helping others during war, during traumatic life events, has come had some rewards due to the help by other countries. Even though helping others is so great sometimes helping others has gotten America into some unnecessary situations. Because of Woodrow Wilson fourteen points in the 1920s, America has been considered one of the most involving foreign aid countries in the world. American has become more and more involved with foreign aid. Based on research America should continue to be apart of foreign aid, but with restrictions like having limits on who to aid and when is the right time to aid.
