They ask if One Money and One Artisan can assist them in hunting down one of their birds up a tree. The older brothers agreed to help, and decide to climb up the tree to catch the birds killed by Hunahpu and Xbalanque. Once they scale the tree, the tree begins to grow with height.
After answering their older brothers’ pleas for help, the Hero Twins instruct their brothers to undo their pants and tie them around their hips to form a tail. The defeat came to One Monkey and One Artisan when they transformed into monkeys. They fled to the mountain forests.
The boys soon return home and explain to Xmucane what has happened to their older brothers.

grandmother in regards to the faces of One Monkey and One Artisan. If she laughs at their appearance, then they will disappear.
She eventually fails the test four times, and the transformed brothers return to the forest, never to return home.
This short tale is of Hunahpu and Xbalanque using their trickery when it comes to gardening.
Since One Monkey and One Artisan are gone, someone needs to tend to their garden.
Hunahpu and Xbalanque volunteer to tend to the garden.
Little does their grandmother and mother know, but the boys use their trickery skills to plant and harvest the garden.
When Xmucane visits the boys at the garden, the boys rub dirt all over them or pours mulch on their heads to make it look like they have been hard at work for hours.
During the night, several animals cleansed the garden of all of the crops and produce.
The boys arrive at their garden in the morning and are confused to see all of the crops are missing.
In an attempt to catch the thieves, the boys hide in a clearing.
The boys fail at trying to catch the puma and jaguars. The Hero Twins are successful in catching the second set of animals which is a deer and rabbit. The boys grab them by the tail, but it is ripped off and left in their hands. Four of the animals do not give themselves up for capture (a fox, coyote, coati, and peccary).
This is the story on how Hunahpu and Xbalanque learns of their fathers and their deaths.
The last of the animals to try and escape the Hero Twins’ grasp is a rat.
The boys eventually capture the rat with their net.
Hunahpu and Xbalanque squeezes the rat behind his head, causing his eyes to bulge out. In addition, they attempt to burn the hair off the rat’s tail.
The rat informs Hunahpu and Xbalanque what happened to their fathers and that their ball equipment still resides under the roof of their house.
This information intrigues the boys, leading them to develop a plan on gaining access to the equipment without their grandmother or mother know.
The plan starts with the rat getting into position under the roof by the equipment.
Then the boys send their grandmother and mother to go fetch them water during dinner. During this time, the rat will dislodge the equipment from the roof and throw it to the boys.
This section is about the Hero Twins’ journey to Xibalba seeking revenge.
With their fathers’ ball equipment in hand, the boys venture to the ball court and start to play.
Little do the boys know, but this is the same action that aggravated Xibalba.
This familiar woke up the lords of Xibalba, just like when One and Seven Hunahpu played months ago.
This game then causes the lords to summon the twin boys down to Xibalba.
The messengers of Xibalba inform Xmucane that the boys have been summoned because they have aggravated the lords.
Xmucane then informs a list of her own messengers to inform the boys instead of doing it herself.
She catches a louse and gives the same message the Xibalban messengers gave her.
On its journey to deliver the message, the louse comes across a frog. The frog offers to help by saying it will be quicker if the louse travels inside the toad’s mouth.
The toad then crosses paths with a snake and explains the situation. The snake suggests the same offer that the toad gave to the louse. So, the toad jumps inside the snake.
The snake then comes into contact with a falcon. Just like past two times, the snake eventually slithers inside the falcon’s mouth and all four animals travel to the ball court where the twins play.
The falcon arrives at the ball court and perches itself upon a branch.
In false defense, the boys shoot the falcon in the eye with their blowgun.
The falcon informs the boys that he simply holds a messenger inside of his stomach.
In a trade, the boys heal the falcon’s eye and the falcon throws up the snake.
The snake says the same phrase as the falcon and then throws up the toad.
The toad says the same thing, but he is unable to throw up the true messenger. The boys kick the toad in the behind and then pries open his mouth as an attempt to free the louse.
When the louse finally comes to surface, it delivers the message that the Xibalbans told Xmucane.
The boys return to their house and heart-broken grandmother.
The boys reassure their grandmother by each planting an ear of corn in the middle of their house.
If the boys die, so will the corn. If they survive, then the corn will flourish in health.
Now is the tale of Hunahpu’s and Xbalanque’s quest to Xibalba.
The Hero Twins successfully cross the same obstacles their fathers faced before reaching the crossroads of four different paths.
They first came upon a series of canyons and cliffs.
Once they pass the two canyons, they successfully navigate through the rapids, the brothers come across Blood River and then Pus River in which they used their blowguns to cross.
After defeating these past obstacles, Hunahpu and Xbalanque finally arrive at the crossroads.
These four roads are slightly different than the roads offered to their father.
Instead, the possible roads the brothers could take are: Red Road, Black Road, White Road, and Green Road.
When they arrive to these four roads, they call for a spy named mosquito.
The spy’s job is to bite all of those present on each of the roads. The Hero Twins instruct the spy to bite everyone, from the first person to the last.
He first goes down the Black road where in reality two mannequins sit. He bites the first two, of whom do not scream out in discomfort.
The mosquito comes across the third seat where the real One Death sits. Once bitten, One Death yells out in pain.
This reaction causes Seven Death (who is sitting right next to him) to ask what is wrong. This pattern of someone being bitten and someone asking if they are alright.
Eventually, this pattern reveals the true identity of each of the lords sitting in the line. This is the first trick that the Hero Twins put on the lords of Xibalba.
After claiming that the people present are actually mannequins, Hunahpu and Xbalanque go down the row and greet each lord without messing up the order.
After failing their own test, the lords try to get Hunahpu and Xbalanque to sit down on the burning bench but the boys deny the offer.
Just like their fathers, the boys enter their first test.
The first test they enter is the Dark House.
The messenger of One Death mentions that the goal for the Dark House is to try to keep a lit torch and lit cigars the way they are (meaning that the characteristics should not change, for instance each object cannot get shorter).
To pass this test, the Hero Twins swap Macaw tail feathers to mimic the look of fire. For the cigars, they tip the end with fireflies.
Each of these tricks kept “burning” the whole night.
The lords are convinced that they have beat the boys.
To their dismay, the Hero Twins have tricked the lords for a second time and is successful in the first house.
In response to this sudden win, One and Seven Death challenge the boys to a ball game.
The two sides argue about which ball to play in the game: the Xibalban’s ball or the Twins’ ball.
The argue ends with the Xibalban’s ball being used. However, the ball transforms into White Dagger and the boys refuse to continue. In an attempt to persuade the boys to stay, this dangerous ball is replaced with the rubber ball.
After this conflict, the prizes are described and laid out.
If the Xibalbans win, then they receive four bowls of flowers.
They are to receive: a bowl of red petals, a bowl of white petals, a bowl of yellow petals, and a bowl of whole ones.
The Xibalbans end up winning the ball game and the boys have to deliver the flowers before the night is done.
After the ball game, Hunahpu and Xbalanque continue with all the other tests set up by the Xibalbans..
The second house they enter is the Razor House.
This house is intended for their death.
Instead of dying, the boys trick the blades and claim that the flesh of animals are their own. This causes the knives to drop to the
ground.
While in this house, the boys request assistance from a group of ants to go pick the prize flowers.
The ants end up tricking the garden guardians and leave with the prizes.
When the lords come check on the boys, there are four bowls of flowers awaiting them. This shocks the lords deeply.
The next night, the boys enter the Cold House.
Huge winter storms blow inside the house.
To beat the cold winds, the Hero Twins simply block out the environment.
The following night, Hunahpu and Xbalanque are escorted to the Jaguar House.
This is the house where jaguars run rampant, trying to find something to sink their teeth into.
To evade this danger, Hunahpu and Xbalanque simply tells the jaguars not to attack them.
To keep the jaguars satisfied, the Hero Twins throw bones all over the house.
