Persuasive Essay On Pitbulls
Pit bulls — referring to dog breeds such as American Staffordshire terriers, American pit-bull terriers, American bull terriers, and numerous other breeds with similar genetics — cannot lock their jaws (StubbyDog). Pit bulls are not ferocious beasts. In fact, according to StubbyDog via stubbydog.com, “pit bulls score at or below average for aggression when compared to other dogs.” Pit bulls, like all other dog breeds, are not naturally aggressive — they’ve been given their bad rep due to the fact that people who fight dogs for sport — “dogsmen” (Dogs Bite) — prefer pit bull breeds to other canine families due to the fact that pit bulls are undeniably a strong and powerful breed. However, “no single neutered” — or spayed — “household pit bull pet has ever killed anyone” (StubbyDog). Despite the popular misconception, pit bulls cannot lock their jaws. Dogs Bite states that there is literally no difference in the bone structure and function of pit bull breeds as opposed to other breeds. This myth has presumably started up due to the fact that pit bulls, mostly the aggressive and mistreated kind, do have a strong bite and do have the tendency to “hold and shake,” as stated by Dogs Bite via their …show more content…

But all pit bulls should not be banned and put to blame due to the fact that some pit bulls hurt humans and other dogs. StubbyDog says that pit bulls showing signs of extreme aggression are usually just a problem with the way the owner has raised the dog and/or the way the dog has been treated throughout its life. If your pit bull is prone to aggression, PitBulls: Dogs for Smart People write that it is your job to put your dog on a safe and secure leash and spay or neuter your

Pit bulls have many different stories of where they came from. According to Jon Bastian, the pit bull originated in the 1000’s A.D. They started in Greece. Then eventually Britain took the dogs from Greece and started breeding them there in Britain. Finally, they ended up in Rome after they invaded Britain and took the dogs. Then, they started spreading around the world. Also from Jon Bastian, is the story that they came into existence in the 1400’s A.D. as boar hunters and sheep herders. Pit bulls have also been used to catch pigs that may have escaped the pen. Despite those facts, almost every pit bull is not a fighter. American motivational speaker Wayne Dyer once said, “Judgments prevent us from seeing the good that lies beyond appearances.” (Dyer, 2012). This quote holds true in relation to the public’s perception of “pit bull” type dogs. Pit bulls are often judged by their muscular bodies, large head, and strong jaws. Pit bulls are consistently portrayed in the media as aggressive as well. Because of this, pit bulls face a variety of different obstacles to overcome. From breed specific legislation (BSL), to dog fighting, to homelessness and euthanasia, the list of obstacles to overcome may seem impossible. However, “Experts say that five factors affect a dog 's tendency to bite: owner quality (quality of care, level of supervision provided); degree to which the dog has been habituated to people; training received (level and type); behavior of the victim; and genetic predisposition to be dangerously aggressive” (Pet Owner Liability, 2001).Only through education on the true nature of the breed and promotion of responsible ownership can pit bulls be helped.…

Within all of the controversy about the pit bull breed and whether or not they should be banned, I have formed my own educated opinion; Pit bulls should not be banned. Why should we punish the dogs for the way they are being raised and trained? A dog will do anything to be that loyal companion, to do right by his owner and more importantly to be loved by his owner. If a dog’s owner shows him love only when he is being aggressive and/or fighting, the dog is going to think what he is doing is right. A dog, like a child, needs to be taught right from wrong. If the dog owners don’t teach them that fighting and aggressive behavior is wrong, they will never learn.…

They use pit-bulls for dog fighting due to pit-bulls are quick to learn, eager to please and easy to handle. According to The American Pit-Bull Terriers, “Once a pit-bull accepts you as their master, they will gladly lay down their own life to please you.” The breed has an incredible sense of determination; once they start, they will not stop until they cannot keep going anymore or until their owner tells them to stop. The desire to complete their task combined with their unbelievable sense of loyalty makes them an easy target for dog fighters and criminals alike. The myth that pit-bulls love to fight is just a myth, it’s come from the human exploitation and their sense of determination. They may not start the fight; however, if one does start, they will not back down. Pit-bulls are not just great for fighting; they can be used as search and rescue dogs, police dogs, and even therapy dogs. These dogs were bred to bite and hold bulls, bears and other large animals around the face and head. When baiting large animals was outlawed, people turned to fighting their dogs against each other instead. The larger, slower bull-baiting dogs were crossed with smaller, quicker terriers to produce a more agile and athletic dog for fighting other dogs. Some pit bulls were selected and bred for their fighting ability. Which means that they may possibly be more likely than other breeds to fight with dogs. It doesn’t mean that they can’t be around other dogs or that they’re unpredictably aggressive.…
