California lawmakers advanced a bill that would require every single-occupancy bathroom in the state to be relabeled with “all gender” signage, making it clear that none of those spaces are exclusively for men or women. The vote, 14-0, took place in the business and professions committee and the bill will next be considered in the appropriations committee. Advocates often emphasize that the change is cheap—less than $50 for a new bathroom sign plus the labor of switching them out—while the benefits can be substantial for transgender and gender non-conforming people, who are often harassed when using sex-segregated facilities. …show more content…
Throughout the years the LGBT community has been treated poorly, though lately they have been slowly gaining more freedom and rights.
Recently with the bill of gender neutral bathroom signs being required for all public, single-occupancy bathrooms. It has been said that expansive measure has never been passed on the state level, though several cities have taken part in the growing gender-neutral bathroom revolution in recent years, including San Francisco, Seattle, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Austin, Texas. All of us have a sexual orientation and a gender identity, and this shared fact means that discrimination against members of the LGBT community, based on sexual orientation and/ or gender identity, is an issue that transcends that community and affects all of
us. I do agree with having gender-neutral bathroom signs, but I do not agree with enforcing it. People around the world face violence and inequality – and sometimes torture, even execution because of whom they love, how they look, or who they are. Sexual orientation and gender identity are integral aspects of our selves and should never lead to discrimination or abuse. I personally would think if there was a regulation for passing the bill for the public, single-occupancy bathrooms if the California government would pay for themselves to replace the old signs. Since overall, most people do not really mind when the bathroom signs are gender neutral compared to unisex signs. In conclusion, it would be best for California since it benefits people who are uncomfortable in men’s or women’s rooms for personal reasons; like people who are not women or men and/or people who are gender nonconforming. As well as parents/caregivers whose children are a different gender from them. I do believe that there is a benefit to gender inclusive than unisex bathrooms.
