Persuasive Essay On Texting And Driving
The use of cell phones while driving has become a large issue in the modern world and is, in my opinion, the biggest distraction while driving. In the past couple years, there have been laws passed to try to stop people from using cell phones while on the road. These laws have lowered the amount of cellphone usage while driving, but it is still a big problem. I believe that these laws are for the best of the people and are only for the safety of drivers and pedestrians. Three of the biggest distractions that cell phones can provide while driving is texting, calling, and social media. The most common occurrence of cell phone usage while driving is texting and driving. Many people argue that texting and driving is harmless because it only takes a few seconds to read or send a text, but it has been proven that those few seconds of a driver’s attention being drawn toward a phone and away from the road can have serious and even fatal consequences. There are many accidents that have been because one of the drivers are texting. A text is not worth hurting another driver or pedestrian, or even worse, taking the life of another. Even though the driver can be looking at the road while calling someone, they can still miss the little things which can lead to big consequences. If a complication occurs on the road, the driver may not be able to avoid an accident because they have a phone in the other hand. The safest way to drive while in a phone call, in my opinion, is to put the phone on speaker or use a hands free phone jack, so the driver can drive with both hands. Calling while driving is not as distracting as texting and driving, but should still not be done for the safety of drivers and the people around

As modern technology has advanced over the years, the number of distractions to driving have increased. It is not only a phone call, or a conversation with a passenger, that can take attention from the road- but more contemporary forms of inattention, which stem from texting and driving. Being distracted while driving can lead to fatal results. Attempting to juggle operating a vehicle and typing out a text message is just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than driving while intoxicated. Traffic safety experts classify distractions into three main types manual, visual and , cognitive. Manual are those who move their hands freely from the task of controlling the vehicle. Visual, simply when you focus your eyes away from the road and last but not least cognitive, when you let your mind wander away from the task of driving. Even Hands-free or voice-activated text message and email services that are present on your phone or in your car are some of the most major distractions for drivers nowadays. Although you may not be directly holding onto the phone and controlling it, you have to press the buttons in your car or on your Bluetooth headset, speak the proper commands to the device, and then speak the full content of your message or email. This takes your mind off the more important task of focusing on the road and distracts you by causing you to think about something else. When operating a cell phone in any kind of way while you are driving you are directly performing each of these. Texting creates a major distraction while you are driving. In fact, the average amount of time that you may be distracted from the road while texting is about 5 seconds. In a vehicle traveling approximately 55 miles per hour, you will be essentially driving the length of a football field without looking where you are going. sending text messages is the most dangerous. A person…
