Persuasive Essay: Pro-choice Abortion In 1973 in the United States in the Roe V. Wade decision, the supreme court ruled that women, in consultation with their physician, have a constitutionally protected right to have an abortion in the early stages of pregnancy- that is, before viability- free from government interference. (Guttmacher Institute) This did not spark the controversy of the topic, however. Can you remember a time in your past or even in the present where you could bring up the topic of abortion and everybody was calm and supportive? I cannot. Abortion has been a discouraged activity it seems since before abortion was even printed in a dictionary. Most Americans are very hostile to the idea of women aborting their unborn children, but there are also many that are supportive to the idea, because they are more understanding and do believe there are rational reasons for this to occur. Religion is a very remarkable influence in human ways of life and it is mostly because of religion that people negatively view abortion. I am not pro-abortion, however I am pro-choice. Nearly half of pregnancies among American women are unintended, and of all of these women 54% who have had abortions had used a contraceptive method during the month they became pregnant. (Guttmacher Institute) So many people believe that people have abortions just because they can but in most cases, you will find that is not the case. There are a variety of reasons other than ‘because they can’ or because they may not want a child. However, I feel like if the parent does not want the child and they are going to be uninvolved and unsupportive, not just physically but emotionally as well for their child, then they should in fact abort because these unwanted kids often end up in foster care and are exposed to acrid lives where criminals are often the result of children living with negligent parents.
