The Age of Revolution persuasive essay

In the 17th and 18th centuries, lots of European countries broke out great conflicts. The long time war, heavy taxes, and weak government were dissatisfied common people. Therefore, people tried to revolt the government and replace a new one. This time period is known as “ The Age of Revolution”. Some people believe that, “The Age of Revolution” is not a appropriate title for this time period. However, “The Age of Revolution” is an appropriate title for the conflicts of the 17th & 18th centuries because people overthrew the government or social order to replace a new one in a forcible way. But in 1688, parliament overthrew James II and exiled him to France. This conflict is known as “ The Glorious Revolution”.The purpose that people wanted to reach was getting more rights, and they made it come true. Since the parliament held the actual power, it would be beneficial to all common people. The social structure changed to a new way which is the king should follow the parliament and get permission for any decisions from them. The Estates-General was an essential meeting in Frence. It composed by three Estates, which were clergy, nobles and middle class. They wanted to combining 3 Estates together for holding more power because the middle class (3rd Estates) had more people than the other two. The 3rd Estate separated from The Estates and set up a new government named National Assembly in an unofficial way due to the rejection from the 1st and 2nd Estates. The establishment of the National Assembly stated the ending of the monarchy government. After the build of the National Assembly on July 14th, 1789, the French Revolution was broke out by The Storming of the Bastille because the conflict between the 3rd Estate and Louis 16th. At the end of French Revolution, a new government called “ the Directory” was formed. The French Revolution is one of the representative conflicts of The Age of Revolution. It overthrew the monarchy and replaced the Directory. Identically, it has also changed the social structure that power shifts from the king to the common people.     French Revolution was from 1789 to late 1790s. The revolution was caused by cultural, financial, political and economic factors. The Enlightenment brought France new ideas; the bad financial crisis led Louis XVI implemented new taxation policies and reduced privileges, which increased the conflict in the society; for political, Louis XVI faced the resistance to royal reforms from privilege classes; economic market especially for the grain market was in disorder. All of these factors mixed to cause the appearance of French Revolution. It can be divided into four stages. As first stage was from 1788 to 1792, French elites articulated its grievances against the king. They refused taxation and attacked despotism supported Enlightenment-inspired program. In 1792, these tensions exploded into war and the beginning of the republic. The second was from 1792 to 1794, acute crisis, consolidation and repression happened in that period. The Terror did save the republic, but it exhausted itself and collapsed in 1794. Third stage was from 1794 to 1799, the government drifted and the state fell prey to a military leader Napoleon Bonaparte. Some historians also include the forth stage into the revolution, which was from 1799 to 1815. Napoleon’s rule was punctuated by astonishing victories and catastrophes and constitutes the end of the revolution. French Revolution is very important for changing the whole world’s social structure and culture. It accelerated the development of republics and democracies in Europe and other parts of the World by changing old traditions and expanding the arena of human rights. I choose Industrial Revolution and French Revolution for this question because both of them are significant milestones in the history in a earlier period comparing to other revolutions.
