The Government plays a big role in dumbing down education by not really caring about how much our students are actually learning, instead they just pass them to try to compare with other countries education such as Japan, China as well as others that are above America and because our government doesn’t take our education seriously we are ranked really low compared to the other schools in different countries, also there is a conspiracy that not only is the government involved …show more content…
in dumbing down our education it’s also the colleges, they don’t teach the right things to students that they also need in life. The missions of universities have changed, we used to be leading with 25-34 year olds with university degrees but now the U.S. is in 12th place! The world economic forum ranked the U.S. at 52nd among 139 nations which is just horrid. Although they just tested the quality of its math and science, we should still be leading. Universities aren’t even focused on teaching you the things you need to know such as math, science, English, etc. Basically the core subjects, instead they are training students how to get a job. “Only 2% of the country’s colleges and universities require an education in core subjects such as mathematics, economics, science, English and history” (Adams) If America continues on this path our education will be destroyed and America will be doomed.
A survey was done in 2010 at a local college “Only 3% of the country’s educational institutions require students to take an economics class before they’re allowed to graduate” (Adams). As a result of this Americas graduates are graduating functionally illiterate and non-educated. They don’t have any real world skills or the actual understanding of how our society works. They don’t know how to buy a house, pay taxes, supply and demand, stock market, etc. It is safe to say that America’s future looks grim and we should all be worried. What is being taught in classrooms is random, useless and meaningless; too much time is wasted on useless topics. America’s class curriculum is different than before. The purpose of education used to be to make a student an independent well rounded individual who can make a difference in the world with their knowledge. If that is the case then why do we have activities such as sports, dances and pep rallies? Although without these activities school would be dull and boring but most of the students would probably do better in school without all these distractions and useless
activities. Another problem with our education is that many students can’t catch up. No one takes into account the students who can’t read or do basic math. The curriculum is for all students, but not everyone is equal, not every student is as smart as the other. Teachers should take time with students so that they actually understand the material instead of just shoving them along with the others. Children are under a lot of stress nowadays due to overworking themselves with pounds of homework, because of this they have to adapt into survival mode. One of two things could happen. Either you adapt into the school system or you fail. To adapt you have to learn the rules, no matter what the rule is. Those who do not adapt fall behind unless they can find another source of education. Either way for the kids entering public school you either become a robot or a peasant.
