General Purpose: To persuade

Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience that the "ozone hole" is not caused by man and therefore requires no policy against CFC's.

Central idea: The ozone layer/"hole" is caused by fluct. in the environment and CFC's are little if any of the cause of ozone depletion. CFC's are very heavy, they stay close to the ground and do not affect the stratosphere. Volcano's put out approx 10X more times chlorine than man produces. Ozone Center of WA states: "The 1991 volcanic eruption of Mount Pinatubo led to temporary severe ozone depletion but recent observations have shown that ozone concentrations have returned to pre-Pinatubo levels." The change in the ozone layer is related to seasonal

Ozone is produced when highly energetic solar radiation strikes molecules of oxygen O2 this causes them to split and produce O molecules. They then join with the remaining O2 and produce O3 molecules. These O3 molecules are what are known as Ozone. The "hole" in the ozone layer is not actually a hole it is a thinning of the ozone layer due to seasonal changes.

I. Staying low

a. The weight of CFC's makes it impossible for them to harm the stratosphere. Here are a few examples; air 29, nitrogen 32, CFC's over 100, Hydrogen 2, O2 16.

b. Volcano's spew 289 billion tons of HCL (also an ozone depleting substance, this seems more likely to cause harm to the Ozone Layer. As it is an upward motion of the eruption.

II.Natural Causes

a.Volcano's again: 289 billion tons of HCL compared with 750,000 tons of manmade HCL.

b.It was once thought that the methane gas from the flatulence of cows was the "reason" for the hole in the ozone layer, this theory was later discarded due to methane gases weight ( and possibly the money from the beef industry)

c.The latest is a fungus that grows in the forest produces methyl which is know to destroy the ozone layer, ozone fights back it is a known fungus killer. A system of checks and

Bad Stats

a.NASA admits the satellites used to monitor the hole are only semi reliable

b.In 1980 est. 18% dep, in 82' est. 7%, in 84' est. 2-4%, in the 90's very little

c.The latest from NASA: Paul Newman of NASA's Goddare Space Flight Center:: "it's just really weird" "It's so far off from the norm, we're just astonished by it" This is in response to this years hole being almost non existent.

d.

IV.The Antarctic - The problem exists because of the small amount of the hole that is not refilled each year

a.From June to September cold winds blow around the region which prevent warmer air from entering

b.The small amount of water vapor in the stratosphere freezes and forms thin clouds of ice

c.These Ice crystals convert safe molecules like ClONO2 and HCl to more reactive ones like HOCl and Cl2

d.The ice crystals are eventually melted by the warm air and by November the "hole" is refilled

V. This Years "Hole"

a.The hole has split into two holes this usually occurs later in the season: basically this means that the "damage" isn't as great this year.

b.Turbulence caused by the mountains in the northern Hem. Keeps the polar vortex from growing too strong therefore, not as much "damage" at the North

The ozone layer is one of the most debated scientific subjects of the last decade. The growing problem of its depletion is being researched heavily all over the world, and methods are being researched to try and solve the problem. There have also been many debates concerning the relationship between the ozone layer and the onset of global warming. Before solutions can be developed, however, what the ozone layer actually does and what is causing it to be depleted must be understood.…

In the last thirty years, it has been discovered that stratospheric ozone is depleting as a result of anthropogenic pollutants. There are a number of chemical reactions that can deplete stratospheric ozone; however, some of the most significant depletion comes from the catalytic destruction of ozone by freed halogen radicals like chlorine and bromine.…

damage is one of them. The objective of this paper is to review the origin, causes, mechanisms and bio effects of ozone layer depletion as well as the protective measures of this vanishing layer. The chlorofluorocarbon and the halons are potent ozone depletors. One of the main reasons for the widespread concern about depletion of the ozone layer is the anticipated increase in the amounts of ultraviolet radiation received at the surface of the earth and the effect of this on human health and on the environment. The prospects of ozone recovery remain uncertain.…

A thin layer of gas called atmosphere surrounds the Earth. The atmosphere serves two important purposes: it is a filter for the suns dangerous ultraviolet radiation rays and keeps the heat, necessary to maintain life on earth, within the stratosphere (Vorlat 361). Ultraviolet light is incredibly dangerous to all the organisms within the Earth 's ecosystem because it causes skin cancer, effects the immune system, and harms plant and animal life. For that reason the atmosphere and the ozone layer within it are crucial to a stable life on this planet. The ozone layer is in danger, however. It is facing depletion by a toxic man-made substance called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Together the international community is working through treaties and conventions to stop this environmental problem.…
