Topic: Abortion
General Purpose: To Argue
Specific Purpose: I want to convince my audience that abortion shouldn’t be legalized.
Thesis Statement: Abortion shouldn’t be legalized because: 1) unborn babies are human beings; 2) it scars the woman mentally and physically; 3) abortion decreases the amount of kids that can be adopted.
Introduction
I. There is a very popular lie being told here in the United States – that abortion isn’t killing an unborn human being.
a. Since abortion was legalized in 1973, over 56 million unborn children have been killed. That’s 155 babies per hour, which is about 1 every 2.6 seconds.
b. According to the CDC in 2010, 55.6% of abortions were performed on women who hadn’t had an abortion in the past; 36.7% were performed on women with one or two prior abortions, and 7.7% were performed on women with three or more prior abortions (CDC). …show more content…
c.
There is also a high risk of these later in life if you get an abortion: breast cancer, cervical, ovarian, and liver cancer, placenta previa, and ectopic pregnancy.
II. In the years 1967-1972 one-third of the United States legalized abortion.
a. But in 1973 Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court and Richard Nixon repealed the criminal abortion laws, so it made it legal to have abortions.
b. "Jane Roe" of the landmark Roe v. Wade lawsuit, whose real name is Norma McCorvey, is now an anti-abortion advocate. McCorvey writes that she never had the abortion and became the "pawn" of two young and ambitious lawyers who were looking for a plaintiff who they could use to challenge the Texas state law prohibiting abortion.
c. "Mary Doe" of the companion Doe v. Bolton lawsuit, the mother of three whose real name is Sandra Cano, maintains that she never wanted or had an abortion and that she is "ninety-nine percent certain that [she] did not sign" the affidavit to initiate the suit
III. I’m a strong activist against
abortion.
a. I have never had anyone in my family or friends that has had an abortion.
b. But it has become very clear to me that everyone is a human, even a fetus.
c. Today I am taking the side of the Pro-Life activists.
IV. Abortion should be illegal in the United State for three reasons:
a. First, unborn babies are human beings.
b. Second, abortion scars the woman mentally and physically.
c. And finally, abortion decreases the amount of kids that can be adopted.
Transition: I will now tell you what every abortion clinic out there hides from you: fetuses are human beings!
Body
I. Fetuses are human beings, even from conception.
a. Abortion is common everywhere because everyone thinks that a fetus isn’t a human being. But here are some facts that proves that it is a human being.
i. 8 days from conception, heart begins to beat, with the baby’s own blood. ii. 28 days from conception a baby has eyes, ears, and even a tongue! Muscles are also developing along the future spine. Arms and legs are budding. iii. 42 days: Skeleton is formed. Brain coordinates movement of muscles and organs. Reflex responses have begun.
b. Our country’s founding documents make it clear, the right to life is God-given and absolute.
i. It also states that the right to live cannot be legitimately taken by men. ii. No man, no government has the right to deprive one of life or liberty without a trial by jury, regardless of skin color, age, stage of development, level of dependence upon others for survival, or place of residence.
Transition: So clearly as you can tell by the facts provided a baby is a human being even from conception. But if you still don’t believe me just think about the harm that you can do to yourself mentally and physically from an abortion.
II. Abortion does more than just kill a human baby, it also could leave you with mental and physical issue in the future.
a. First, having an abortion could cause a lot of mental problems.
i. A lot of women that have had abortions have reported that they have had: eating disorders, relationship problems, guilt, depression, flashbacks of abortion, suicidal thoughts, sexual dysfunction, alcohol and drug abuse.
b. Second, having an abortion could cause a lot of physical problems as well.
i. An abortion could cause: heavy bleeding, infection, incomplete abortion, sepsis, anesthesia, damage to the cervix, scarring of the uterine lining, uterine perforation, damage to internal organs, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis, and death. ii. That is a lot of problems that could arise from abortion. Incomplete abortions is really sad, to me, if you have an incomplete abortion the baby will be born prematurely and it could be missing some of its limbs or die later on. If you don’t believe me watch October Baby it is a great example of a incomplete abortion.
Transition: So to me an abortion comes with way to many risks to have one. Especially with so many families out there that are willing to adopt because they want a baby.
III. The claim that it would just be easier to have an abortion instead of carrying for nine months so someone can have a family, is crazy.
a. There are so many families out there that aren’t able to have kids at all and the fact that a woman just wants to kill one instead of carrying in her stomach for nine months is sad. That little kid inside of that woman could be going to a great family instead millions of kids are dying each year.
i. In 2009 1.16 million abortions took place. ii. In 2011, approximately 1.06 million abortions took place in the United States. 17 percent of those happened in California. iii. In 2012, based on a state-level data, approximately 1.04 million abortions took place.
b. Most woman think of an abortion as just their decision but what they haven’t realized is that the baby inside of them has a decision as well as the couple that could adopt that baby.
i. According to the CDC women between the ages of 20-24 obtained 32.9 percent of abortions in 2010; women between the ages of 25-29 obtained 24.5 percent. ii. That is a lot of babies that could have had a great family to live with but instead they aren’t living anymore.
c. Most couples are going without having a family because of a lot of reason but the number one reason is that most women are getting abortions.
i. There are many reasons why women can’t get pregnant: ovulation problems, blocked fallopian tubes, uterus shape and some of them are because of men. ii. Men can also be infertile due to: problems with sperm, and blocked tubes.
Transition: Hopefully I have been able to show you the reasons why abortion shouldn’t be legalized.
Conclusion
IV. In summary, abortion shouldn’t be legalized in the United States for three reasons:
a. First, unborn babies are human beings.
b. Second, abortion scars the woman mentally and physically.
c. And finally, abortion decreases the amount of kids that can be adopted.
V. I really hope that what I said today really helps you see that abortion isn’t the answer. There are so many great and beautiful kids out there today, why not keep adding to them?
