Pet Overpopulation Research Paper
Did you know that there are over 2.4 million healthy dogs and cats in shelters? Did you also know that one every thirteen seconds are euthanized ("Pet Overpopulation: The Humane Society of the United States")? These animals don’t ask to be brought into this world to be put in a small, cold enclosed cage. I personally wouldn’t want to be born into the world to be given up on, would you? Too many people don’t understand or even care to understand this sad statistic. In fact, humanity is so selfish in that aspect it makes me truly sick. Why do we have to have the cutest puppies or kittens? What’s wrong with an older dog, you don’t have to train them half the time. They need love too. My goal gave me the motivation to reach out to my local shelter that influenced me to explore programs in the future to help all dogs and cats.
Although it is impossible to know an exact number of how many dogs and cats inhabit the United states, the numbers range up to 70 million cats alone ("Pet Statistics")! This horrific estimate is due to pet

I plan to utilize my education and training and put all my resources to work with the help from my local shelter. Using different programs such as, The Farmers Program, which is a program designed for cats to be able to run free without mating, by neutering them first so our local farmers can use them as barn cats. The other program is called the TNR Program, or Trap- Neuter- Release Program, which is when you trap the animal, Neuter/Spay them and then release them back into the habitat that they were trapped from. These Programs have proven success rates, but as of now, that’s only the tip of the iceberg. The real success will be from running fundraiser and awareness meetings to notify the local community and surrounding communities about the fight. The more people we get on board this ship, the quicker we will see the

Willamette Humane Society Spay Neuter Clinic produced a video for the general public to explain how the use of spaying and neutering animals can reduce the overpopulation of strays and reduce the number of humane euthanasia performed. United States of American has done their best to reduce the overpopulation of cats and dogs by teaming humane societies and clinics together, adoption of animals was conditional to spay and neuter of the animal. Through my own experience, volunteering with humane societies, the change in the behavior after spaying and neutering these undomesticated animals has meant a future for them and fewer animals are left wandering the streets and fewer animals returned to shelters as future population is decreased. Most essays today discuss problems concerning people, but this one is about animals, specifically dogs in shelters. In Animal Shelter Euthanasia, authored by Samantha Stoltenburg, Stoltenburg addresses the wrong of euthanizing dogs because of overcrowding and them being unadoptable. She calls out animal shelters and the community for not doing enough to help save the poor animals' lives. Throughout her essay body, she has stationed propositions that she feels will both help dogs find welcoming homes and benefit the community.…

The last time you saw a cute puppy in a pet store window did you happen to think about where exactly that puppy came from, what kind of life it had before, or where its mother is? According to the National Mill Dog Rescue, 99% of puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills, and almost every puppy sold in a pet store has a mother who will spend her entire life in a tiny cage, never being petted, never being walked, never being treated like a dog. Based on those facts alone, it is not difficult to imagine the vast number of innocent, voiceless dogs forced to suffer their entire lives for the sole purpose of profit.…

    Aspca Pit Bulls Analysis

According to statistical data posted on Barkpost.com, pit bulls are the #1 shelter intake dog and the #1 most frequently euthanized dog in shelters for no other reason than overcrowding. Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized in this country and of those 1.2 million, approximately 40% of them are pit bulls (Moore). Only 1 in every 600 pit bulls in this country will find a loving home (Prasad). Advocates, rescue groups, shelters and animal rights groups like the ASPCA are likely unable to be completely objective when it comes to these dogs who they often see abused, mistreated and dumped at their shelters only to ultimately die due to overcrowding. The emotional toll these workers must endure is unimaginable. However, as a pit bull owner myself, I worry when an uninformed or neutral audience is not given the full picture on something like the responsibility of caring for such a controversial pet. I cringe when I see pit bull puppies intentionally misidentified as “easier” breeds such as Labrador retrievers or boxer mixes in an attempt to find homes for less adoptable puppies labeled as pit bulls. I myself, was led to believe by my rescue group that I was adopting a vizsla mix puppy. As the owner of a purebred vizsla, I…

All the while, millions of animals are being euthanized every year, due to pet’s owners turning them out on the streets or being surrendered to the shelters. According to Kenny (2012), “As of 2011, it is estimated that there are over seventy-eight million dogs in the United States, only twenty-one percent of these pets were adopted from animal shelters. Six to eight million dogs and cats enter shelters across the country each year and three to four million of these animals are¬¬¬ euthanized in the shelter system.” (Kenny, 2012). According to the ASPCA (2017), Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are…

My personal argument is this, my wife and I adoption a dog from our local shelter and after that they keep sending us emails of hurt animals that need good homes. I understand they need good homes but we can’t take any more animals in. The media is helping theses shelters pull on the heart strings of animal lovers by sending emails that show images of hurt animals and stated that if we don’t adopt any more than they would be youthonized. This was not our first dog from a shelter but my conclusion is after the countless emails that are about 6 a day I have decided not to adopt any more from this place. It…

Animal shelters nationwide euthanize more than four million dogs and cats annually. Many people believe cats and dogs in animal shelters are street animals or something is wrong with them. The fact is most dogs and cats in shelters are the offspring of cherished family pets, even purebreds. Whether a litter is intentional or unintentional, the efforts to find good homes often fail. Spaying and neutering cats and dogs have many health, behavior, and mess benefits. Overcrowded animal shelters, affect us all. Millions of tax dollars are spent to round up lost, abandoned, and unwanted pets. A large percentage of that money is spent to euthanize these pets when homes cannot be found. The solution is to spay and neuter pets at an early age; this not only reduces overcrowding and euthanizing in shelters, but reduces the chances dogs and cats will develop health issues, behavior problems, and messes created by pets going into heat or marking their territory.…

As the single child in a family with working parents, I spent the most time of my childhood living and hanging around with my dog. This experience might be one of the reasons that I am very compassionate to animals and sensitive to people’s needs. My voluntary work is in a welfare house called Alenah's home. I love working there because I like seeing the smile face of the children there – even some autism babies don’t smile facially, I believe they can feel the love when being caressed softly.…

After readings several articles and journals supported by years of research and well-respected scientists. I see only a few opinions available to reduce the population of stray cats and dog. There is opinion of doing absolutely nothing. By doing nothing, the population of stray dog and cats would be reduced, the potential epidemics will not be stopped or prevented. This would continue to effect the general human population through the epidemics not only would the general human population effected but the animal population would as be effected and hopefully reduce the stray population as well. There is no denying that we also suffer from an overpopulation of humans. Is ethical to allow the humans to be subject to these epidemics such as rabies?…

If an area in Pasco County is affected by pet overpopulation, then faeces waste produced by the pets will lead to increased nitrogen concentration in the soil and fecal coliform contaimination in nearby aquatic ecosystems. Pet overpopulation is common due to people not neutering their animals, causing them to reproduce and overcrowd areas. People also do not want their animals, so they just hand them to the shelter and hope they get adopted, but that happens frequently, so many people doing that will cause shelters to become overwhelmed with animals. Adding to that, people find animals on the streets and bring them in because they can not help them, so this adds to overpopulated shelters. This leads to costly euthanasia. Pet overpopulation can damage an environment in…

As the daughter of an anti-pet mother, having a puppy has been my frustrated dream. Once, when younger, I approached my mother and told her that I didn't need a pure-bred dog that I would take in one of the many stray ones. Of course, the answer was a "No". Ever since then, I became aware of the lots of homeless animals on the streets. Now that I'm older, I realize that if our country's government doesn't even focus properly on human beings, animals have little to no chance of having a place in our "Immediate Help" listing.…

There is an overwhelming amount of pet euthanizations in the United States each year. While these numbers are gradually declining, there is still a superfluous amount of animals who are put to death in order for animal shelters to save resources and space. The aid of having no-kill animal shelters in communities is a topic that has been debated for years. The absence of a no-kill animal shelters in Caldwell County is astounding, and quite frankly, a problem that has endured for too long. However, this decline in animal euthanization raises an additional question. What do we do with the overpopulation of animals? How do we thwart the euthanization of millions of animals without inducing a substantial increase in stray pets?…

Statistics show that 60% of dogs and 70% of cats entering animal shelters never make it out alive (PAWS Chicago). Public awareness campaigns have spread in the US to encourage people to keep pet cats indoors, especially during times of the year where their prey may be abundant or vulnerable like mating and migration seasons. Bob Barker, longtime host of The Price is Right, as well as his successor Drew Carey ends every show with the line “help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered.” Despite this message being drilled into the minds of millions of Americans watching the show over the last 40 years, the effects seem negligible. Steps are being taken to reduce the amount of stray/feral cats through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs in big cities like Buffalo, Philadelphia, and others, but the National Fish and Wildlife Service does not have a policy supporting or banning the policy. Some organizations, like the American Bird Conservatory, are against TNR because they believe the cats should not be released afterward due to the danger they continue to pose. In an attempt to limit cat populations, NYC, and other cities, have laws which require that cats permitted to roam outdoors be neutered. In regions where endangered animals are threatened by cats, habitats are being fenced off to be less accessible, but not a guaranteed to…
