Socrates Essay Socrates who was he? “Socrates was a Greek philosopher. Socrates was born c. 470/469 B.C., in Athens”. (Wiki) In Phaedo, I understand that Socrates he has arguments that demonstrate that the soul is immortal. “If we live on after bodily death, there is no reason to fear it.” (Phaedo) However, these ideas are attributed to Socrates in Phaedo. Of course we have no way of knowing if he feared death or not. He appeared not to fear death but who knows. You hear people say all the time, "I have no fear of death"--I've even thought that to myself-- but there's no way they or myself can know that until the last few minutes of life. on time or another or even at the last moment.
We're members of the animal kingdom and fear is an involuntary thing. He also believed, Socrates, “that living life consistent with the intention of understanding the immortal will result in allowing an understanding of the soul without the delusion of societal norms. Socrates states, "I want to explain to you how natural it seems to me that a man who really devoted his life to philosophy should be confident in the face of death, and hopeful of winning the greatest of prizes in the next world after death...” (2011, fall) Ordinary people seem not to realize that those who really apply themselves in the right way to philosophy are directly and of their own accord preparing themselves for dying and death. Socrates has no fear of death. Devoting his life to Philosophy and sacrificing all the normal societal desires, Socrates understands not to
fear the unknown, but welcome the new experiences that your soul will face when the inevitable death reaches his body. In Phaedo, Socrates discusses the nature of the afterlife on his last day before being executed by drinking hemlock poison. Socrates has been imprisoned and sentenced to death by Athenian political leaders for believing in Athenian gods. He was not afraid to die because once you die there was nothing left to do. He also said that if your soul was attacked by death your soul would not die. That could be another reason why he did not fear death. One question that I would ask him is how he came to the understanding that your soul is immortal as well as god?
