Read the questions first. Then answer them while watching this episode of "Earth Revealed". The video is available online at http://www.learner.org/vod/video.html?sid=78&po=18 . The index for these programs is online at http://www.learner.org/progdesc/index.html?uid=78 . Each segment is 30 minutes long.
1. What happens during metamorphism? Heat and pressure change the rocks
2. What is a protolith? Original rock that existed before metamorphism
3. What temperature and pressure ranges are common in metamorphic environments? Greater than 200-800 degrees celcius 2-several tens of kilometers beneath the surface
4. What is directed pressure and what usually causes it to occur? Pressure can be applied on different parts of the rock causing it to bend or shear apart.
5. What happens to minerals as temperature and pressure increase? Minerals re-combine to make new more stable minerals
6. What is foliation? Minerals that layer because of stress
7. Why are foliated rocks often unstable when exposed at the surface? They are very similar to lindeslides
8. Describe temperature increases and recrystallization. New crystal lattices and mineral types- causes minerals to grow larger
9. What are migmatites and how are they formed? A rock that has both igneous and metamorphic traits, temp becomes so great that it begins melting
10. What changes in composition often occur during the metamorphic process? Liberation of h2O
11. What factors affect the specific changes which take place during metamorphism? High temperatures cause dehydration, range of pressures
12. Describe contact metamorphism. Cold rock is intruded by hot magma
13. Describe regional metamorphism. Motions of plates at convergent plate boundaries
14. How is metamorphism like cooking (called an "isochemical" process). As temp and pressure increase, atoms become immobile, therefore creating new minerals
15. What are
