Photographic Icons By Philip Gefter: Rhetorical Analysis
In the world of art, the photograph has conventionally been used to establish original subjects that document and reflect cultures as accurately as possible. However, in Philip Gefter’s essay, “Photographic Icons: Fact, Fiction, or Metaphor”, Gefter points out that, “just because a photograph reflects the world with perceptual accuracy doesn’t mean it is proof of what actually transpired. (208)” What Gefter is telling us is that it is that the ordinary reality of the image is not what is important; the metaphoric truth is the significant factor. What makes photojournalism essential is that it helps show us how to view the world in an individualized way. It is, essentially, a public art, and its power and importance is a function of that artistry. From the war photography of Mathew Brady (who was known for moving dead bodies to create a scene) to Ruth Orkin (who directed a second shot to capture “American Girl in Italy”, when the first “real” shot was not to her liking), Gefter underscores that, although these shots are not the unedited version of life, …show more content…

We revere some photographs because they are images of a fact or time in history, others are compelling because they capture an aspect of the human condition, and yet others appeal to us because they point out to us something beautiful; it’s inspiring and exciting to be reminded that the world can be good and charming. All three of these perspectives ring true for the Parks photograph. She is an icon herself; her story is a force of history. She helped define human condition for an entire race of people and bolstered the Civil Rights Movement. And it is, without a doubt, a quiet, beautiful tale of a kind, demure woman who wanted change.     The rediscovery of an icon allows contemporary audiences to gain new ways of seeing the significance of their role in history. Simon Nasht’s rediscovery of Frank Hurley’s story in his documentary, allows him to repeatedly question and challenge Frank Hurley’s relevance as a historical photographer and contemporary perceptions of the worth his photographic work. Through Nasht’s focus on the manipulation of war and explorer images he undermines their credibility as historical artefacts. In the World War I scene, Nasht centres against an ominous black background two single still images captured on the battlefield before overlapping them to reveal Hurley’s technique of creating composite images whereby falsifying the representation of the event. In addition to the montage, a sombre voice-over with an accusatory tone heightens the tension of the scene and delivering a condemning judgement on his work.     She traveled all over the globe and captured moving pictures that impacted the way people viewed the world. She was the eyes for the American public, and her photographs allowed the viewers to see what was actually happening in this world in which we live in. To this day, the photographs taken by Bourke-White tell a story of the suffering and pain that innocent people were forced to endure. Through her photos, Bourke-White hoped to bring people a new perspective. She takes this photos to communicate to those who weren’t able to see the aftermath of these horrendous tragedies in person.     In “The Heroism of Vision” Sontag discusses the relationship between beauty in truth and its impact on photographic history. She holds that photography is meant to find beauty in the world and capture it. For example a beautiful photo of a sunset makes an actual sunset banal, why search and wait for a sunset when it can be seen whenever you want.     Family photo albums have existed in many different forms. Not only as a personal flick book documentation containing “the chronicles of a family’s private story” (Fong, 2004, p.86) capturing special moments and events of the past; but the idea of documenting one’s past through images has been in existence since humans roamed the earth. Through pre-historic silhouettes of humans painted on cave walls; through the Renaissance where portraiture was available to those families who could afford it; to the point in history where cameras were available to the amateur mass public whereby photographs could be developed by any single individual. Here moments could be captured at complete ease in great volumes and assembled into albums and passed down to generations. But why the desperation to capture our identities in these freeze-frame moments that were previously hours? What do these freeze-frames say about our families, our identities and ourselves? This paper will discuss these ideas and how a photo album is a selective and stylized documentation of our lives. Theories of how the awareness of others viewing one’s “private story” could manipulate one’s personal identity through careful selection of chosen images displayed in the photo album. How the photo album generates nostalgia and longing that transports the viewer from an unpredictable future to a past that is stable. And finally how the overwhelming support of the Internet allows one’s photo album to be rendered digitally for many others to view questioning that the photo album is only a narrow vision of one’s life and therefore portraying an artificial lifestyle.…
