Photosynthesis Lab Report
Between February 27th and March 2nd my partner and I conducted an experiment about the photosynthetic rate of spinach discs. We were hypothesizing that if we place all 6 individual cups underneath a different color of light, the spinach discs that produce enough oxygen will have the highest amount rise, which will show us the optimal color of light for photosynthesis. These different colors of light included blue, red, green, fluorescent, regular light, and classroom light. The classroom light was our control cup during the lab. Before we conducted our experiment, the class learned about the photosynthetic process of, not only spinach discs, but plants in general. As I did more research on photosynthesis, the Calvin Cycle, wavelengths and pigments required for a proper equation of …show more content…
On day one, the red and blue light were our first two colors of light. We did not expect the results we received from trial one, therefore we added a second trial. From our research we concluded that the photosynthetic rate is quickest when blue and violet wavelengths are projected on the discs. However, the spinach discs under the red light had a much higher count after the 10 minutes compared to the blue light. On day 2 when we tested the green and regular light, we also had unexpected results, having three to four more discs rising in the cup with regular light than the other colored light. Finally on day 3, florescent and class light was tested, meeting our predictions. We both inferred that the florescent light would have the highest percentage of discs that would rise, and all 15 rose during both trials. Out of all different colored lights, the florescent and regular light spinach discs rose the quickest, and the blue by far rose the slowest. After we concluded the experiment we learned the reason behind the use of florescent lights around growing plants, especially for rapid

More specifically, however, this experiment focused on the photo part of photosynthesis, or the light dependent reactions in chloroplasts. Light dependent reactions require the presence of light to function, so that this light can be taken to create ATP and to reduce NADP+ to NADPH. Consequently, light dependent reactions shut down in the absence of light, thereby stopping the production of ATP and NADPH (Sadava et al. 2012). With this information, an experimental hypothesis can be formed that the presence of light will cause the redox activity of the spinach chloroplasts to increase, while the absence of light will cause this activity to decrease. One possible null hypothesis could be that there will be no significant difference in redox activity between spinach chloroplasts that are under light and in the dark. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis must be that there will be a difference in this activity between the two groups of chloroplasts. To test these hypotheses, chloroplasts were extracted from spinach leaves in order to create enriched chloroplasts, which were a vital…

In this study, we are interested in examining the effects of photosynthesis in spinach leaves in the presence of different light conditions. The light conditions that will be tested are no light, white light and green light. Therefore, we hypothesized that the O2 rate of consumption would occur more in the green light condition and CO2 rate of consumption would occur more in the no light condition.…

The objective of this study was to figure out how different light colors affected the rate of photosynthesis in spinach leaves. This was done by taking leaf disks, removing the CO2 and sinking them in beakers. One beaker filled with regular water, the other filled with a mixture of water and sodium bicarbonate. The beakers were then placed in front of the light sources and the amount of disks floating was recorded every minute. In our study the disks exposed to the red light started to float sooner than the…

The overall experiment consisted of three smaller experiments as a result of the different properties chlorophylls possess and the need to test them individually to receive the most accurate results. Preparation for the lab began with selecting a medium to large spinach leaf and deveining it. Once the spinach was prepared, it was ground in 5 mL of 100% acetone, creating a green acetone extract. The extract was filtered through a funnel with a kimwipe and into a test tube. The volume of the filtered extract was estimated, and one half of the estimated volume of petroleum ether was added to the solution, along with two drops of water. The test tube was then inverted to ensure it was properly mixed, and the phases could separate.…

This experiment is concerned with identifying photosynthetic pigments found in spinach plants and determining the spectrum of light each absorbs. By using paper chromatography, different pigments of spinach leaves can be separated. The knowledge gained in this experiment is relevant to understanding how the process of photosynthesis works. A Real-world application for this includes the harvesting of clean energy sources, as scientific advances have led the way to artificial photosynthesis on the path to replace fossil fuels (Nath, 237).…

In this lab, four different types of leaves were tested to see the rate at which each leaf photosynthesized. This lab demonstrates how plants store light, capture light, and use light as energy for reproduction and growth, by photosynthesis. The control in this experiment was spinach, which was tested before any of the other plants were. The other plants that were tested were English Ivy, C4 Plant, and a multicolored plant. Each type of leaf was tested in a sodium bicarbonate solution and a solution of distilled water. It will be shown in the discussion whether the hypothesis made was correct or incorrect. It will be shown in the discussion what could have occurred during the experiment that could have affected the results.…

The data collected throughout this experiment showed that the spinach, DPIP, phosphate solution under the opaque cup had the lowest percent orange light transmittance and therefore the lowest rate of photosynthesis and the t-Tests supported this. The data collected also showed that the solution under the green filter had the second lowest rate of photosynthesis and the solution under the blue filter had the third lowest rate of photosynthesis. This data supports my hypothesis.…

Therefore, green light will not cause any photochemical reaction to occur. In our experiment, we set up four color screens to allow only a certain wavelength of light into our tubes of spinach disks and sodium bicarbonate solution. The idea is that a photochemical reaction will occur within the spinach discs and because of the release of gasses they will begin to float (The Spectrum). Through this process we are able to see the effectiveness of the different wavelength after certain time intervals. The results were not exactly what we had expected. Factually the blue light at 440 nm should have performed the best (Light). It did worse than all the other wavelengths. And surprisingly the green light had two spinach discs floating. The result is that white light is the best for the experiment and the filters inhibit perfect reactions within the plants. Our hypothesis green light…

According to the data my hypothesis is right. “If the spinach leaves are only exposed to green and red light they will have a slower rate of photosynthesis, than if the spinach leaves are exposed to white light will photosynthesize faster” this is because when using different color lights the plant is conversion the carbon dioxide and water into sugar, so the more intense the brightness of the light helps to go through the chemical process rapidly. When doing this experiment it showed that the spinach leaf disks didn’t floated faster under green light. This shows that the rate of photosynthesis is less under green light. This maybe do to the facts of light intensity, , amount of water, amount of sodium bicarbonate and even the size of the…

ii. accurately interpret data and explain results using correct scientific reasoning As the data shows above, the more light there is shining on the plant, the more bubbles there are per minute. Although it dips from time to time, the experiment with two lights always have a higher average than the previous ones. This means that the light intensity actually has an impact on the plant’s photosynthesis levels. The reason that there are more bubbles in the experiments with more light is because of the oxygen release rate.…

It is a well-known fact that plants need light for nourishment, yet many people are ignorant of the reasons behind this. The biological process by which green plants utilize carbon dioxide, water and sunlight to form their own food is called photosynthesis (unknown). Past research has demonstrated that red and blue rays maximize this process (Rothenburger, 1993). The purpose of this experiment was to examine the effect of several different light sources on plant growth. The Five lights sources studied were incandescent, black, fluorescent, colored, and natural light.…
