Pieces of April Pieces of April is an American comedy-drama film written and directed by Peter Hedges in 2003. The movie is the definition of family with members of one’s household, close relatives, or a social unit. Also, it indicates that family does πnot always need to be of blood relation, family can be found in the comfort of our friends, partners, and the like. In the movie, April learns how to appreciate the importance of family and makes some new friends in the process. Moreover, the movie focused on analyzing many different pieces that make up April’s identity and how changes in her development affect her. She had never gotten along very well with her mother Joy or the rest of her family including her father Jim, her young sister Beth, and younger brother Timmy. April doesn’t have the stereotypical picture-perfect relationship with her family. She is the outcast. Her mother explains that she can’t remember one good memory of April; she can only remember April as a troublemaker- portrayed as a tattooed, pierced, once drug-addicted daughter. April’s identity was created from several pieces of a broken heart since she is a disappointment in her family members’ eyes. She never has been a part of her family, always lives on her own, being lonely. It might answer why she find’s her own way to get out of her family.
