Piggy's Spectacles Essay
Have you ever thought that a pair of spectacles used for vision would help you survive in an island? In the Lord of the Flies, the spectacles that Piggy wears symbolizes the use of technology for our society and survival. While the boys are able to survive with the help of these spectacles, these spectacles soon become a wanted technology.
Firstly, the spectacles symbolize technology because it is a tool that is used in creating fire. The spectacles are a piece of technology that are beneficial to the boys when making the fire signal as Jack said, “His specs-use them as burning glasses!” (Ch. 2, Pg. 40). The boys use Piggy’s glasses as a magnifying glass to light the fire. This shows the glasses are a symbol of technology because, they could improvise technology to their suitable need and use it for their survival. However as the story goes on, the spectacles are so important that even the savages want the new technology.
Consequently, Piggy’s spectacles symbolize technology because it is wanted by many people and therefore important because technology is essential for the growth of civilization. The hunters realized that Piggy’s spectacles were the only way they could light the fire for meat. In this allegory, Golding used the spectacles to symbolize technology in order to tell us that we should use technology carefully and also use it for a good purpose.
