Pilgrim's Progress Analysis
The protagonist of Pilgrim’s Progress, Christian, recognizes his hometown is descending into destruction and starts his journey to Mount Zion. On his way, he visits the Interpreter’s House, gazes at the cross, and lingers at the Palace Beautiful. However, the Valley of Humiliation, the battle with Apollyon, and the Valley of the Shadow of Death display the cruelty he also faced. After Faithful dies, Hopeful joins Christian. Together, they face the Doubting Giant, they navigate the Enchanted Ground, and forge through the River of Death. Finally, the two pilgrims reached the Celestial City.

They confront By-Ends and Demas. Then, they rest on the grounds of Doubting Castle only to be imprisoned by its giant. The monster tortures them until Hopeful remembers his magic Key of Promise. They meet the shepherds of the Delectable Mountains who show them the Hill of Error, the Mountain of Caution, and the Bi-Way to Hell. Before they depart, the shepherds show them one more thing. At the high mountain called clear, they present the gates of the Celestial City. The pilgrims encounter Ignorance who is leaving the Country of Conceit. The Flatterer snares Christian and Hopeful in his net, but a shining one frees them. They meet Atheist who denies Mount Zion existence. To stay awake when they reach the Enchanted Ground, they discuss Hopeful’s past and doctrine. They amble through Beulah where Shining Ones wander, flowers bloom, and bread and wine are always available. This is where the Celestial City is located. They can finally view the gates when two Shining Ones explain that they must cross the River of Death before they can enter. They get to the other side and Shining Ones welcome them into

As with all allegories, The Pilgrim’s Regress has characters whose every word, movement, association, is meant to colnvey an idea about a certain idea. As the protagonist makes his or her way through the gauntlet of ideas, rejecting or accepting them, there is a certain path they take, a certain order and a certain reason to the timing and the reason for any meeting or departure. In life, on the other hand, there is no pre-set course laid out for a mind to follow. So, as much as Lewis tries to make a series of events and people for John to ‘stumble upon,’ ‘revelations’ for him to come to, they are predestined by the ending. The hand of God, or the writer, is present in the path of the allegory because of the role of guiding the character. Nowhere does this phenomenon do more to tell about an author’s psyche than in The Pilgrim’s Regress. In the afterword, Lewis admits to “obscurities” of the text, or philosophical knowledge the reader does not have, as well as the uniqueness of the structure. To some, the path did not flow. He writes: “on the intellectual side my own progress had been from ‘popular realism’ to Philosophical Idealism…to Pantheism to Theism…to Christianity…I now know that this is a road very rarely trodden.” John takes this path, though, and as the reader meets charcters like “Mr. Enlightenment,” “Vertue,” the “Spirit of the Age,” “Mr. Sensible,” the “Pale Men,” “Mr. Wisdom,” “History,” and “Mother Kirk,” the reader meets in order those philosophies which C.S. Lewis met. There is very little analysis that need be done here, except for analysis of each individual character and theway in which Lewis, or John, or both treat that character. Merely recognize that, by virtue of Lewis’ own words, the pathway of the book was the pathway of his…

It is a task of the modern novelist to create human beings who embark on a journey of discovery and whom we accept as living creatures filled with complexities. The life of every character starts at birth and ends in death. However fundamental these two events seem in a person's life, there is much more that occurs between the two. Every character takes a journey through life or is called to take one. This journey can be viewed as Joseph Campbell's Theory of the Quest.…

After defeating Apollyon, Christian would have seen me fighting my own battle with the Wayward Pilgrims. They were trying to convince me to join them and had been for hours. Being stubborn, I had refused to stop on my way up difficulty hill, resulting in my being scratched up, and having a broken foot. Having not stopped to rest, eat, or drink I had continued on past Beautiful Palace until I finally collapsed in the Valley of Humiliation. After coming somewhat to my senses, I found the Wayward Pilgrims standing around me. They asked about my journey and after hearing my story had tried to dissuade me from continuing my journey, promising friendships and no difficulties. Being unable to continue forward I was forced to listen to them and stay stubborn in my faith until Christian came along and helped. Seeing my need Christian came over and provided me with food and water to help me regain my strength. Being unable to discourage the Wayward Pilgrims, Christian helped me get up and moving so we could leave them behind. We moved slowly, but eventually made it to the Valley of the Shadow of Death. There we met with men who wished to discourage us from continuing, saying that the way was filled with dangers, and too dark to see the path, But Christian and I being set on our journey continued on. In the Valley of the Shadow of Death there was on one side a quag, no man could get out of, and on the other a very deep ditch, the path was very narrow, and we were forced to walk slowly lest we fall to either side. A few miles in we came to the mouth of Hell and using the weapon of All-Prayer were able to safely make our way…

People all over the world, time and again, have made similar advances and mistakes states Wright in his book A Short History of Progress (Wright, p 57). From the time civilizations have come together, humans have made similar mistakes which have had similar results leading to the destruction of the environment around them and a disastrous end to their own civilizations. Various civilizations such as Easter Island, Catal Huyuk and Mesopotamia have been destroyed because of self destructive traps called progress traps (Wright, p 56). Progress traps are created by three main factors namely by the overuse of natural resources, too much faith in religion and human wars. The catastrophe that causes these traps is not nature but man himself and we…
