For this project I had observed the coolest bug balls on earth, the roly- poly. They are commonly known as the roly-poly, also pill bug, and wood lice. Its scientific name is Armadilidum vulgare. It is actually not an insect, it is an isopod ( a type of arthropod). It’s genus is Armadilidum, it’s Phylum is Arthopoda, and Subphylum is Crustacea. I have observed that the exoskeleton is a blue-gray, it is an invertebrate, it’s mouth, antennae and eyes are located on it’s head, and it rolls into a perfect sphere as defense when being disturbed or threatened. Controlled Experimental Method: I will use eight different colors of paint, and paint 3 ceiling tiles of each color. The colors will be white (control), red, orange, yellow, blue green, indigo and violet. I will place each tile in a separate box that is large enough for the wasps to nest. I will then expose mating wasps to each box for a 24-hour period. After 24 hours, I will record if any nests were made. The point of this experiment is to disprove the spontaneous generation of maggots on meat. Could flies be responsible for maggot formation? Hypothesis is that they are. So, the experiment is set up to see if no maggots, in fact, will form without flies. For the experiment, two clean jars are set out on a clean board. Then I put mean into both jars, closed one jar with a tight seal but left the other one open, exposed to air and flies for four days. In the process of four days, observing both jars, meat in both jars was rotting, flies visited the meat that wasn’t protected. At the end of 4 days, I learned that the jar that was closed and protected from flies didn’t have maggots, while the other one that was exposed to air and flies visited the meat - had maggots.…
The sow bug, also called the pill bug, is an isopod that does not have a wide range of items that it likes to eat. In the experiment we were trying to see how the pill bug reacted with certain man made substances and two substances that they would find in their everyday habitat. We tested ketchup, orange juice, sand, baking soda, flour and water. The pill bugs did not like the ketchup and orange juice I believe because of the strong acidic smell and it didn’t like the baking soda because of the texture. The pill bugs didn’t have a problem with the water and sand because those two are found in the everyday life. The data that we found did not fully support our hypothesis. Not just in our experiment, but the overall object of this investigation was to find what type of environment did the bugs respond to. Our experiment was conducted to provide an answer to the question and not to give irrelevant numbers as our data. As we kept on putting different types of environments in the chamber, I realized that the damp soil was most likely going to be the one that the pill bugs responded most positively to, thus proving the fact that pill bugs like dark and damp environments as habitats. The way that my group analyzed the data was by simply placing the different types of environments that occur in nature, obviously in smaller amounts, and watched the pill bugs go to what they thought was an ideal habitat. To answer the question, there was simply no other way to collect data other than to observe how the pill bugs reacted to the different types of environments given.
