Pineda's Fourth Sun
I like how you said, "Who would need such a title?" The same thought came to my mind when I read it. Both the title and the last line talk about a future in which things are not the way we know them to be right now. Pineda says, "If l could tell you-if you could hear, in the age that comes after-what it was like to live in this Fourth Sun. In its perfection there was everything" (21). The main story is familiar: it is the way the earth is now. It hits the reader emotionally because it is familiar and universally beautiful.

Because Pineda chose to show the reader that the future may not be the same (future humans may not have the beauty and light we have now) in a way that is not preachy, it's actually more effective,

I really liked the symbolism behind the title of this book. The wall that separates the rich airport area and the slums of Annawada has an Italian advertisement for tiles that says “beautiful forever” and the symbolism of that connecting to the title really jumped out at me. The slums and terrible conditions in Annawada is literally right behind the beauty and wealth of the airport.…

In the three stanza poem, the poet commemorates the first anniversary of seeing his beloved. He begins by using imagery from the political world: the royal court of “All Kings”. He juxtaposes this image with the supremacy of the “sun”, the true ruler of all mankind – without which the human race would die; this encompasses the highest concepts of the world. However, the poet then goes on to comment that even the mighty sun and the all-powerful kings have aged “a year” since he and his loved one “first one another saw”. Thus stating that the only thing not susceptible to “decay”; is the narrator and his loved one’s “love”: “our love hath no decay”. Their passion has “no to-morrow hath, nor yesterday” suggesting their mutual love is timeless and beyond the reach of mortality.…

The author distinctively creates a mysterious combination of two different narratives in his book. Some chapters are titled “Hard-Boiled Wonderland”, others are presenting a description of the end of the world. “Hard Boiled Wonderland” reminds me of the narrative common for science fiction or fantasy tales. This is a world where no one has a name, only a role or occupation. The part of the book titled “The End of the World,” on the other hand, is a story of an amateur who is seeking for a place in an isolated town, surrounded by an enormous wall. The narrator has been separated from his shadow and will soon be separated from his mind. Even though the stories seem…

The title is written symbolically because Stephen and Absalom Kumalo have been seperated, but suddenly Absalom reenters Kumalo’s life. The visual portion’s background contains the repetition of the book’s title because certain remarks are repeated throughout the course of the story, but the title must be read in a way so people turn the paper to fully understand life. Bowlby in 1969 proposed the internal working model which suggested that early childhood experiences would determine the adult relationships that child would have in the future. Infants primary attachment style is carried through into adult life so would expect the same expectations in later relationships. Shaver et al suggested three behavioural systems that are acquired in infancy which are attachment which is related to Bowlbys research, care giving where infants learn to care for each other through modelling the behaviour of the primary attachment figure and sexuality systems which is learnt in relation to early attachment so an individual with avoidant attachment will be more likely to hold the view that sex without love is pleasurable. In some extreme cases a child’s internal working model leads them to develop an attachment disorder which means they would resist or reject the mutual intimacy of loving family relationships. Often these disorders occur due to abuse and neglect during infancy which has led to them not developing a close relationship with someone who can comfort and reassure them. Springer et al. in 2007 found that individuals who experience physical abuse have negative effects on adult…

One major theme is the concept of family and relationships. The future society works in almost total opposition to the one of today. In this future, it is considered sinful or wrong to engage in a monogamous relationship, rather, respectable members of society have multiple partners at a time throughout their life. In fact, to be with one person for any extended period of time is grounds for exile to an island isolated from civilization. The philosophy behind this is that if there is no real passion or love, there will never be any sadness or heartbreak when things do not work out.…

There were many women that played specific roles in the story of Sundiata, An Epic of Old Mali. First is Sundiata’s mother, Sogolon Kedjou. Sogolon Kedjou’s mother was a buffalo. When two hunters defeated the buffalo, the buffalo asked the hunters to take her daughter, Sogolon, and to give her a child. Sogolon was depicted as the buffalo women who had deformities in her bodies, and was reminded over and over again in the story that she was the ugliest women that ever lived, but she brought fortune to whomever man that conquered her. It was told in the prophecies by the soothsayers that Sogolon’s son would be the next reigning King after Maghan Kon Fatta. The Great King that would be greater than Alexander the Great and that will unite The Great Kingdom of Mali. In this regard women played an important role as the one that determine a great descendant for the next successor after King Maghan Kon Fatta. Sundiata’s step mother, Sassouma Berete, even though was the first wife of King Maghan Kon Fatta, she did not give birth to the next successor. The next successor was not based on who was the first born of the first wife of The King, but it is more of the women that had been prophesied. It does not matter who the father of Sundiata was, what matter was the mother. The mother was the one who brought the gene to become the next successor.…

“By considering worlds that are logically possible, science fiction can be used to explore our place in the universe and consider fundamental philosophical questions about the nature of reality and the mind.” Science fiction can not only show humanity where their place is in the universe, but also help them take a glimpse into different versions of the future. By taking current issues that our world is facing today, science fiction authors are able to consider both outcomes of an issue and determine what mankind would do to adapt to the new changes. A few authors believe that the future may be bright and some may also think that our future has nothing but darkness and sadness; nonetheless, one of these futures is ours. In the short story, They’re…

On April 23rd, 2011, I went to Simon Sun’s concert at Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg. Simon Sun is a senior at the College of William and Mary majoring in Neuroscience and music. He has played piano for almost seventeen years and was a finalist in the Young Artists International Piano Competition. I was so impressed by his performance on that day, because I have started to learn piano at an early age also, but I could never be as good as he is. Simon is a skillful, dynamic, and energetic player.…

Looking at the title, you can see that it is also the first line of the poem. I believe it sort of sets the tone and provides for a smooth transition into the poem. I personally find the phrase very calming and familiar, potentially the most important line of the entire poem, and most definitely the main line that sticks with you. If you look at the meaning behind the words, it’s possible for them to be referring to the lack of control we tend to have over our deaths. We cannot stop our lives for death, rather he comes at unexpected time, unknown to us. We don’t plan for his arrival, he just comes when it is time to take us from life and deliver us to the entity referred to as eternity. This location is subjective to an individual and the beliefs of an individual.…

The superficially apparent pleas of a lover seeking a relationship serve as a mirror to Marvel's struggle to conquer his artistic prowess.

The poem itself contains three distinct components of argumentation, all which occur within a syllogistic framework. The argumentation of each division begins with an acknowledged impossibility, represented by the conditional tenses of "Had we," "But," and "Now, therefore." Marvel comprehends his incapacity to master absolutely the antagonist of time, but in this poem, he achieves a victory through the creation of an interpretation of time unbounded by a linear backdrop. He uses a three tiered progression of argumentation: 1) a reflection of the writing process removed from traditional conceptions of time; 2) discourse on the urgency of creating written material within human time frames; and 3) the presentation of written material as a celebration of life.

In the first division, Marvel creates a world ideally conducive to his endeavors as a writer by distorting human measurement of time. In the beginning line, the vast and illimitable capacity of the backdrop blurs the relationship of space and…

The theme of the novel answers on of the biggest questions in today’s time as to what the future holds for the human race.Due to the publication date an era in which the novel was first published Wells creates a controversial setting from the reality where people showed hope and promise for the future, whereas the time traveler sees that it is not progressing but in reality the future is falling. Wells uses conflicting images through the narrator to portray a negative tone to the story, and to foreshadow disappointment that will come instead of innocence that a reader would expect by other times in the novel. The novel describes the different issues with society and shows that over time humanity will fall. In the novel, “The Time Machine”,…
