Psychology 105 Writing Assignment 1 Plagiarism is a very common way of cheating on papers at all levels of education. Plagiarism if caught has severe consequences and will result in most situations in you regretting not taking the time and effort to use your own knowledge and words. Not only is plagiarism cheating, but also it is stealing. By choosing to plagiarize and copy someone else’s words you are choosing to steal from them and stealing is never ok. However if you are not educated on plagiarism and want it is and the different forms of it you can easily make the mistake of plagiarizing and may not even mean too. You could for example paraphrase and think that because you did not word for word plagiarize that it is ok when in fact it is not. That is why it is important to check into websites like wsulibs.wsu.edu/plagiarism. This website is great because not only does it go over the little information like what teachers look for when searching for plagiarism but also how to avoid it and the different forms and variances there are. For example in the section about how to find plagiarism it says for teachers to look for something as small as the students tone in the paper changing. In the How to Avoid plagiarizing it gives you steps to follow in order to not plagiarize and in my opinion is a very useful section that can help any grasp a better understanding on how to use your own words and stay out of trouble plagiarizing. This section goes on to give you examples on the differences between paraphrasing and summarizing. This part is useful to know because I think that is one of the harder parts about plagiarizing for people. When they try to “summarize” someone’s words but in turn actually paraphrase and un intentionally plagiarize and cheat. Overall the best tip I obtained from this website on how to avoid plagiarizing was to use your own unique words and sentences while writing because it is plagiarizing
