1. Watch the video and read through the information on diatoms and dinoflagellates. 2. Type in the appropriate columns below the characteristics that apply to diatoms, dinoflagellates and the characteristics they share Characteristics of Diatoms | Similarities Between Diatoms and Dinoflagellates | Characteristics of Dinoflagellates | 1. silicate cell wall and are the most abundant type of photosynthetic organism in the ocean 2. tough outer shell(frustule) that protects the soft inside of the organism and the shape of the frustules helps scientist tell one diatom from another 3. Diatoms that have a pinnate shape display bilateral symmetry and are usually long with extensions or markings come off the diatom at right angles. Centric diatoms show radial symmetry and can be shaped like a circle, triangle or rectangle. 4. Almost all diatoms are found in the photic zone since they rely on the sun's energy. However, within the photic zone we classify diatoms as either benthic or planktonic. Benthic means they are found on the bottom (or attached to floating organisms) and planktonic means they are free-floating. Most centric diatoms are planktonic and most pennate diatoms are benthic. Diatoms are found in basically ALL aquatic environments (salt water, fresh water, cold water, warm water). | 1. single-celled organisms | 1. two flagella 2. make up the symbiotic algae that exist by living in other organisms such as coral and sea anemones 3. second most abundant primary producer in the ocean after diatoms 4. found in the ocean but some are found in sources of freshwater | 3. Use your chart to start making a deduction about the cause of the food poisoning. Based on the information you’ve gathered do you feel that the cause of the food poisoning is a diatom or a

In her article, “A Tale of Two Flagella,” Olivia Judson (2010) states that the dinoflagellate is considered a plant, animal, predator, and a parasite. A dinoflagellate is defined as a large group of single celled organisms that can be helpful and harmful. Dinoflagellates are very diverse in characteristics and abilities. For example, some dinoflagellates perform photosynthesis, some have eyes, and others capture and eat prey. A dinoflagellate can look like a small brown ball that is structured as whorls and spines. Some are microscopic and others can grow as big as caviar.…

Diatoms are single cellular eukaryotes that are super tiny in size. They are pretty much like photosynthetic micro-organisms, some live simple or branched and others are filamentous and others are in a gelatinous envelope or tube. All diatoms are enclosed by something that is called frustule, which is made up of 2 valves that are fitted together by a girdle, which is a connective zone.…

Once upon a time deep inside the sea, there existed a king who had a beautiful daughter by the name Plankton who had green hair. Her large eyes which she had inherited from her grandmother sparkled with excitement from the sea. Plankton liked to take a walk along the sea greeting the sun and having a chat with the sea. Being the daughter of the king, she did not fear to ask favors from her dad whom she knew would provide anything at her request. Every time she felt like going on a tour around the sea waters she would just request for guards to escort her to the sea as she gets to enjoy the company and the beauty of the currents and the charming sunlight.…
