How does it feel during a storm or while looking at trash? Plastic: A Toxic Love Story tells about garbage that washes up along a shoreline, and how the author feels about it. "A Dirge" tells about how nature sounds during a storm. It also explains how everything sounds very sad by saying, "Grief too sad for a song". Both of the story's themes are alike by the way that the authors are describing each story.

Summer Rain is a longer poem than most others written by John Foulcher, which has messages throughout it. Summer Rain is set on a highway during a traffic jam, an experience many people have experienced. The start of the poem sets the scene economically, informing the reader that it is 4 o’clock and that the cars “clutter on the highway”. This gives the reader a visual image of peak hour traffic on a highway, so they can now almost see what is going on in the poem. Foulcher compares the cars to a familiar object, writing, “clutter on the highway like abacus beads”. This simile gives the reader another important visual image. That is the image of traffic grouping as it slows, and slowly ungrouping…

“Marine debris is typically described as any persistent, manufactured, or processed solid material discarded, disposed of, or abandoned in the marine and coastal environment” (Richard C. Thompson 11). If this is the case, how does marine debris end up in and around the water? According to Kimberly Amaral with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, marine debris can reach the ocean three ways; being flushed down the toilet or washed down the drain, ultimately ending up in the ocean; an object getting carried down the landscape or swept into the sewer by rainfall; or items thrown off a ship, landing directly in the ocean (whoi.edu). There are also three major problems caused by this marine debris ending up…

Most people expect that all poetry should be close to the same thing if we were to have the same theme, but in fact, although there are many similarities, there can also be many differences too. Upon comparison of The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock by T.S Eliot and Afternoons and Coffee Spoons by Crash Test Dummies we see just this. These two poems share similarities in theme, and reference to time but do not have similar tones.…

From Alfalfa’s letter in The Little Rascals, “Dear Darla, I hate your stinking’ guts. You make me vomit. You are scum between my toes. Love, Alfalfa,” to the song Love Stinks by the J. Geils Band, it is apparent that heartache is felt by everyone. It can be experienced and dealt with in countless ways, but its universally-felt agony is what allows poets, singers, and writers to connect with their audiences in such a personal manner. In the poem “Getting Through,” Deborah Pope uses poetic techniques to make a personal experience accessible to a range of audiences. It is a poem of heartbreak that uses the devices of tone, language, structure, and relatability to illustrate the effect love can have on people and how hard it is to give that feeling up, even if it is not returned.…

We’ve recently been analyzing the themes of a novel and a poem in our language arts class. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and “Nothing Gold Can Stay” by Robert Frost are two very interesting pieces of literature. The Outsiders is a novel that talks about the divided community of a city, the “Socs” and the “Greasers”, and describes their rivalry and the problems caused by it. “Nothing Gold Can Stay” is a poem that uses themes in nature to explain that good things don’t always last forever. Chapter three of the novel and the whole of the poem share that very theme- Good things don’t last, so cherish them while you can.…

The short story "The Storm" by Kate Chopin revolves around a setting that is both exciting and enticing. Chopin 's portrayal of the storm 's setting reinforces the plot 's main thematic elements through descriptive imagery that coincides with the characters emotions throughout the story. The characters in this story, Alcee and Calixta in particular, each make their own best of the situation as the storm hits. The storm is described as a violent one, with thrashing winds and blinding rain. The cracking of the thunder is frightening to Calixta, and jump-starts an emotional reunion between her and Alcee.…

We 're treating the oceans like a trash bin: around 80 percent of marine litter originates on land, and most of that is plastic. Plastic that pollutes our oceans and waterways has severe impacts on our environment and our economy. Seabirds, whales, sea turtles and other marine life are eating marine plastic pollution and dying from choking, intestinal blockage and starvation. Scientists are investigating the long-term impacts of toxic pollutants absorbed, transported, and consumed by fish and other marine life, including the potential effects on human health.…
